Description

Incumbents in this position operate, maintain and repair stationary engines and mechanical equipment to provide utilities or power for buildings and industrial processes under the training of a Class I licensed Stationary Engineer. Upon successful completion of their working test period and being granted permanent status, a Stationary Engineer (Trainee) shall receive a title change to Stationary Engineer.

Essential Functions And Responsibilities
  • Operates large electrified pump units (4,600 h.p.) and related equipment located in two large pump stations.
  • Maintains and adjusts distribution system pressures within standards.
  • Monitors, operates, and maintains the plant electrical distribution system.
  • Monitors and operates plant pumps to maintain sufficient water flow for treatment.
  • Monitors security operations and supports security as required.
  • Follows all Safety Rules and Regulations.
  • Reports all significant events to supervision as directed.
  • Communicates in a courteous, professional manner with all internal and external customers.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Data Utilization: Requires the ability to perform mid-level data analysis including the ability to audit, deduce, assess, conclude and appraise. Requires discretion in determining and referencing such to established criteria to define consequences and develop alternatives.
  • Human Interaction: Requires the ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others within well-established policies, procedures and standards. Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from others.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments, such as a personal computer, HVAC systems, piping and air compressors. Ability to repair complex equipment and machinery.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference, descriptive and advisory data and information such as log book, boiler charts, blueprints, equipment diagrams and non-routine correspondence.
  • Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; requires the ability to perform mathematical operations involving basic algebra and geometry.
  • Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective.
  • Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental and/or subjective criteria, as opposed to criteria that are clearly measurable or verifiable.
  • Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, odors, wetness, humidity, fumes, noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, toxic/poisonous agents, or pathogenic substances.
  • Physical Requirements: Requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull moderately heavy objects and materials, twenty (20) to fifty (50) pounds, such as working on heavy machinery. Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling in order to perform maintenance duties.
  • Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, sounds, odors and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks, such as assessing problems in machinery.
Other Requirements
  • Must be available to work varying shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • A shift differential is paid to full-time employees working evening and night shifts.
Qualifications

An Associate's degree in Building Maintenance, Building Systems Engineering Technology, or a related field with an emphasis on mechanical and electrical systems. OR one year of experience assisting in the operation and maintenance of a water treatment facility. OR two years of experience assisting in the operation and maintenance of industrial equipment. OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Licenses

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present it upon request. Please note type of license, number, class and expiration date on the Employment Application. Only qualified applicants who provide proof of a valid driver’s license will be considered for this position. Applicants must possess and maintain a Stationary Engineer’s License (Class II Restricted) issued by the City of St. Louis by completion of the working test period (eleven months).

Preferences

Experience assisting in the operation and maintenance of high pressure boilers and steam generators, chillers in excess of 500 tons, building automation systems, emergency generators or related equipment.

Veterans Preference Points

To be eligible for veteran's preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of their DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application or upon request. The Director of Personnel may, in their discretion, accept alternate documentation.

City Residence Preference Points

City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
