Job description

aStaff Software Engineer, Android Ecosystem based in Canada.

This is a highly technical individual contributor role focused on advancing platform support across a broad Android ecosystem, including mobile, laptop, and hybrid devices. You will help developers deliver high-quality applications while taking advantage of platform-specific hardware and software capabilities. The role combines systems programming, architecture, performance engineering, and deep technical problem-solving. You will investigate runtime performance across a wide range of devices and drive measurable improvements to startup and execution efficiency. Working across platform, core engine, editor, and graphics teams, you will influence architecture and engineering practices at organizational scale. The position also offers significant opportunities to mentor engineers and lead strategic initiatives that shape the evolution of the platform.

Accountabilities
  • Lead complex, cross-team technical initiatives, building alignment around architectural decisions, implementation strategies, and engineering approaches.
  • Analyze the technology stack to identify performance bottlenecks and optimization opportunities, then collaborate with relevant teams to develop, validate, and deploy improvements.
  • Establish and use performance benchmarks to investigate runtime behavior across entry-level and high-performance Android devices.
  • Investigate and resolve complex system-level issues spanning multiple software subsystems, including platform, runtime, engine, and graphics components.
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to engineers across the organization while promoting strong software engineering practices, code quality, and rigorous development standards.
  • Contribute to strategic platform engineering planning, including technical direction, priorities, and long-term roadmap development.
  • Produce detailed technical documentation, contribute to design reviews, and clearly communicate complex engineering decisions and recommendations.
  • Work closely with platform, core engine, editor workflow, and graphics teams, as well as internal and external technical experts, to deliver validated platform improvements.
Requirements
  • Extensive experience with Android systems programming and advanced proficiency in C++, C#, and Java or Kotlin.
  • Demonstrated experience architecting, developing, and deploying large-scale platform, runtime, or systems software.
  • Strong understanding of computer architecture, memory hierarchies, cache behavior, and CPU/GPU interaction.
  • Advanced knowledge of asynchronous execution, multithreaded programming, and software architecture for complex systems.
  • Proven ability to understand, navigate, debug, and contribute to large and sophisticated codebases.
  • Strong expertise in diagnostics, debugging, profiling, and performance optimization.
  • Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional technical initiatives and influencing engineering direction beyond an individual team.
  • Strong communication, technical documentation, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
  • Experience mentoring software engineers and providing technical leadership in complex development environments.
  • Experience with game-engine architecture or development, including Unity, Unreal Engine, or proprietary engines, is an asset.
  • Familiarity with C# managed runtimes, real-time 3D rendering, and modern graphics APIs such as Vulkan is an asset.
  • Contributions to open-source projects or published technical work are valued.
  • Sound technical judgment regarding the use of AI tools and technologies within software development workflows.
  • Professional working proficiency in English is required due to frequent collaboration with global colleagues and partners.
Benefits
  • Competitive base salary in Canada: CA$153,000–CA$229,600 gross for Zone A or CA$165,400–CA$248,000 gross for Zone B, depending on primary work location.
  • Potential eligibility for equity awards and company incentive programs, including discretionary annual bonuses.
  • Comprehensive health, life, and disability insurance.
  • Competitive retirement and pension programs.
  • Generous vacation and personal days.
  • Support for new parents through family leave and family-care programs.
  • Employee stock ownership opportunities.
  • Commute subsidy and office amenities, including snacks.
  • Mental health, wellbeing, and employee assistance programs.
  • Employee Resource Groups and an inclusive, collaborative workplace culture.
