Product Design at Gusto consists of over 70 creative, collaborative people dedicated to our mission to empower small businesses and their employees. We are a cross-functional team focused on Design, Research, Writing, Ops, and Front-end Development, always seeking to build understanding and empathy for our users. About The Role

We are seeking a Staff Design Systems designer to lead our native iOS and Android design system development, a key priority that will transform user experiences across our products. You will standardize existing mobile applications and create a cohesive visual language that extends our web design system to native platforms. The ideal candidate has expertise in Figma component creation, token architecture, accessibility, documentation, and collaboration with engineers. This is an opportunity to shape our mobile design future from the ground up.

About The Team

Our design systems team includes designers and engineers focused on creating and maintaining Figma and coded components for various platforms. We are in an exciting phase of evolution, advancing our existing design system. The team is embedded within Gusto’s design organization, led by our CDO, Amy Thibodeau.

Responsibilities

1. Define and maintain semantic and functional tokens for the design system.
2. Create native and mobile-responsive components, patterns, and templates in Figma.
3. Support Gusto teams in designing native experiences through Office Hours and Slack.
4. Collaborate with Engineering to ensure consistency across Figma, native apps, and web views.
5. Document and publish design decisions and guidelines.
6. Communicate collaboratively with a service mindset.

Qualifications

• 3+ years experience in mobile design systems supporting full lifecycle development, including native components.
• 5+ years product design experience.
• Strong technical skills in API design, Figma, Material, and HIG guidelines.
• Deep understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG AA compliant).
• Excellent documentation and storytelling skills.
• Additional strengths in animation, prototyping, data visualization, or iconography are a plus.

Compensation & Benefits

Our salary range for this role is $139,000 to $199,000 annually in Denver and most remote locations, and $179,000 to $221,000 in Seattle, San Francisco, and New York. Final offers depend on experience and location. We provide competitive benefits, including equity, aligned with our Total Rewards philosophy.

Work Environment
