Job description

Burns & McDonnell Canada is seeking to hire a Staff Instrument & Controls engineer to join our growing Oil, Gas & Chemical global practice in Calgary, AB. The Oil, Gas & Chemical global practice executes complex projects across the industry, from midstream and logistics facilities and refining assets to chemical production plants and renewables and emerging market opportunities.

As a Staff Instrument & Controls (I&C) Engineer, you will work on minor and major scale EPC projects and serve mid-stream, refining, chemical, and renewable industries.

Our Staff I&C Engineers work with multi-disciplined engineering and design teams to perform detail engineering, including front-end planning work, develop I&C quantities and cost estimation, conduct conceptual studies, perform technical quality reviews, attend Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), and support construction & commissioning activities. This position provides an opportunity to work underneath an I&C lead and to work independently on smaller projects or standalone activities.

Responsibilities include :

  • Develop instrumentation design deliverables, including Instrument Index, Instrument Installation Details, Instrument Location Plans, Wiring Diagrams, and Loop Diagrams.
  • Knowledge of process measurements such as temperature, pressure, flow, level, analyzers, and control valves. Familiar with various software and technologies for selecting appropriate instruments.
  • Perform preliminary sizing calculations for instruments such as orifice plates, controls valves, relief valves, and thermowells.
  • Prepare instruments data sheet and specifications, instrument inquiry / bid packages, technical bid summaries, and purchase recommendations.
  • Develop controls design deliverables, including I / O list, Process Control Narratives, Graphic Sketches, Cause & Effect Diagrams, Alarm Rationalization, and manage third party control system suppliers to comply with the control system design requirements, including participating in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT).
  • Prepare control systems (DCS and / or PLC) and Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) Data Sheets.
  • Conduct review of instrument and control systems vendor drawings and data. Interface with suppliers, clients, other engineering disciplines, and detailers / designers.
  • Participate in the development of P&ID's and equipment / construction subcontract package specifications.
  • Work with Burns & McDonnell regional offices - I&C teams and other disciplines to produce I&C engineering and design deliverables.
  • Work with clients and vendors for information required to complete engineering design deliverables on schedule and building long working relationships.
  • Interface and support construction personnel directly from the office and support construction and pre-commissioning activities in the field, as required.
  • Work with SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI) and other smart tools to produce engineering and design deliverables.
  • Able to support construction and startup & commission activities in the field, as required.
  • Responsible for applying knowledge of commonly used I&C design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures, within the engineering services industry.
  • Responsible for compliance with company and project site safety policies.
  • Provide leadership and guidance for less experienced engineers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Comply with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering from an accredited program required.
  • 3 years related experience. Completion of a master's degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to clearly communicate both verbal and written technical information.
  • Must be proficient in the use of computer software (i.e., MS-Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
  • Valid driver's license required. In addition, must meet standards to qualify for and maintain the Company's vehicle driving privileges as outlined in the Company's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy.
  • Must be willing and able to obtain or currently hold a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
