Overview

We’re looking for a Staff Engineering Manager to lead GitHub’s Web Systems team; the group responsible for architecting and maintaining the frontend infrastructure that powers GitHub.com. This team builds and owns the platform that enables product engineers to ship accessible, performant, and scalable UI by default. Web Systems maintains the UI build and delivery pipeline, including monorepo tooling, server-side rendering (SSR) infrastructure, frontend CI/CD, and performance observability. The team’s work is foundational to every web product team at GitHub. By delivering an opinionated and intuitive developer experience, Web Systems makes it easy to build modern, high-quality web applications at scale. This is a rare opportunity to lead a high-leverage team and shape the systems, standards, and priorities that influence how GitHub builds for the web—driving quality not only through infrastructure, but through culture and clarity.

Responsibilities

As Staff Engineering Manager you will:

  • Lead and coach a high-performing team of engineers responsible for GitHub’s frontend infrastructure.

  • Drive the roadmap and delivery of core systems such as modern build tooling, SSR infrastructure, monorepo management, and frontend observability.

  • Help product and engineering leaders understand the impact of platform investments by making invisible infrastructure work visible, measurable, and connected to user and business outcomes.

  • Partner with platform teams, product engineering, and leadership to align on priorities, identify pain points, and drive adoption of best practices across the organization.

  • Maintain and evolve critical systems such as the UI asset pipeline, testing infrastructure, and deployment automation.

  • Foster a culture of inclusive collaboration, engineering excellence, and continuous improvement.

  • Help guide architectural decisions that support GitHub’s long-term scale, accessibility, and performance goals.

A Day in the Life
  • Collaborate daily with internal engineering teams, product management, and engineering leadership to align on priorities and deeply understand the problems we need to solve.

  • Coordinate cross-functionally to reduce friction, scale best practices, and steer the organization toward unified infrastructure approaches.

  • Unblock obstacles for your team ensuring engineers stay focused on solving meaningful problems.

  • Run regular 1:1s with direct reports to provide clear, actionable feedback and support career growth and progression.

  • Shape the team's roadmap and execution strategy, making sure foundational infrastructure work moves forward with clarity and purpose.

  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders—keeping them informed of project milestones, team health, system performance, and risk areas.

  • Review architectural proposals and implementation plans to ensure the team delivers resilient systems and high-quality code.

  • Maintain high team velocity by balancing thoughtful design with fast iteration—shipping features, fixes, and infrastructure improvements continuously.

  • Model and reinforce a culture of engineering excellence, inclusion, and continuous learning.
