Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Engineer, Site Reliability based in Canada.

We are looking for a Staff Site Reliability Engineer to shape the reliability, security, and scalability of the cloud platform supporting millions of users and multiple engineering teams. In this senior technical role, you will take ownership of AWS infrastructure, Kubernetes environments, CI/CD systems, and developer tooling while helping define long-term platform strategy. You will combine strong software engineering capabilities with deep infrastructure and security expertise to build automation, improve operational practices, and establish secure defaults across production systems. Working across engineering teams, you will drive reliability initiatives, strengthen incident response, and improve the developer experience through practical self-service solutions. You will also help evolve an AI-forward engineering culture, using AI tools to accelerate delivery while maintaining high standards of quality and security. This remote-first opportunity offers significant technical influence, cross-team visibility, and the chance to build resilient systems that support families during important life moments.

Accountabilities
  • Own and evolve AWS infrastructure using Terraform, ensuring EKS clusters, databases, networking, and core services remain secure, reliable, performant, and up to date.

  • Design, build, and maintain tested infrastructure modules and automation tools that establish secure defaults for least-privilege access, secrets management, workload identity, and network isolation.

  • Develop production-quality software tools and services, supported by tests, documentation, runbooks, and self-service workflows that enable engineering teams to operate independently.

  • Improve CI/CD systems and deployment workflows using platforms such as CircleCI and GitHub Actions, maintaining fast and dependable delivery processes.

  • Integrate security controls into development and deployment pipelines, including dependency scanning, container scanning, secret detection, and short-lived deployment credentials.

  • Support developers across local, staging, and production environments, troubleshooting infrastructure issues and removing technical blockers.

  • Define and improve observability standards, service-level objectives (SLOs), and actionable alerting in collaboration with engineering teams.

  • Use incident trends and operational data to prioritize reliability improvements and reduce recurring issues.

  • Validate backups, restoration procedures, and failover mechanisms through regular recovery and resilience testing.

  • Lead or support incident response, facilitate post-incident reviews, and ensure corrective actions are implemented to prevent recurrence.

  • Shape the long-term infrastructure and platform roadmap, leading cross-team initiatives from architecture and design through rollout, adoption, and ongoing operations.

  • Mentor engineers and promote strong practices in reliability engineering, security, automation, and platform development.

  • Use AI tools as part of everyday engineering workflows to improve productivity, explore technical trade-offs, and raise the quality of engineering output.

Requirements:
  • Strong software engineering experience, including a track record of building and operating production-quality tools or services with automated tests, code reviews, and maintainable interfaces.

  • Hands-on experience designing, implementing, and operating security controls for production systems, particularly access management, workload identity, secrets management, and network isolation.

  • Deep expertise in Terraform and Infrastructure as Code, with the ability to independently own and maintain infrastructure modules and workflows.

  • Proven experience operating AWS environments at scale, including EKS, RDS, cloud networking, DNS, CDNs, and load balancers.

  • Extensive production experience with Kubernetes, including troubleshooting complex operational issues.

  • Experience designing and improving CI/CD systems using CircleCI, GitHub Actions, or comparable platforms, with an emphasis on developer productivity and delivery reliability.

  • Strong observability experience with tools such as Datadog, Sentry, PagerDuty, and Cronitor, including the ability to build actionable alerts and avoid unnecessary noise.

  • Experience participating in on-call rotations, managing incidents, conducting post-mortems, and implementing meaningful follow-up improvements.

  • Ability to support developers across local, staging, and production environments, providing practical guidance and resolving issues collaboratively.

  • Demonstrated interest in and regular use of AI tools in engineering workflows, with curiosity about emerging capabilities and how they can improve software development.

  • Strong technical leadership, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to influence engineering practices across teams.

Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation.

  • Remote-first work environment, with team members across the United States and Canada.

  • Company-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance.

  • Retirement savings plan with company matching.

  • Flexible spending accounts.

  • Generous paid parental leave and paid time off.

  • Winter Wonder Week: an additional company-wide paid week off at the end of the year.

  • Remote work stipend to support your home office setup.

  • Wellness and lifestyle perks covering physical, mental, and emotional health, parenting, childcare, and financial planning.

  • Access to AI tools, including Claude and ChatGPT, as part of everyday work.

  • Career development opportunities and performance-based advancement.

  • Twice-yearly team gatherings to strengthen collaboration and relationships.
