Job summary

Faire is seeking a Staff Engineer for the Data Platform to own the plumbing that moves data from production systems into analytical stores. You’ll design the next generation pipeline, build hard parts, and mentor others while ensuring reliability for analysts and data scientists.

You’ll work with CockroachDB, MySQL, Kafka, Spark, Iceberg on S3, Airflow, Fivetran, Snowflake, and Databricks, setting data contracts, SLAs, and governance.

Qualifications

• Deep experience with change data capture and streaming ingestion from operational databases through Kafka.
• Hands-on with lakehouse architectures on Iceberg with S3; discuss partitioning, compaction and copy-on-write vs merge-on-read.
• Strong Spark skills; experience with Databricks and Snowflake against shared storage.
• Experience with data quality, observability, contracts, SLAs, and tools like Anomalo or Monte Carlo.
• Experience operating Airflow at scale and with managed ingestion like Fivetran.
• Strong SQL; ability to model data for analysts and data scientists.
• Solid Python plus Kotlin/Java/Scala/Go; Terraform on AWS; data governance and cross-team leadership.

Responsibilities

• Set the technical direction for data movement into analytical stores and own the roadmap for years ahead.
• Build the CDC and streaming ingestion layer from CockroachDB and MySQL into Kafka, then Iceberg on S3.
• Implement data contracts and quality checks across the platform.
• Enforce datasets ownership with SLAs and integrate data quality tooling like Anomalo and Monte Carlo.
• Run Airflow and Fivetran reliably and decide what to buy vs build.
• Own platform reliability: SLOs, on-call, incident reviews, and cross-team migrations.
• Mentor engineers and drive cross-team data initiatives.
