At Baker Tilly, we care about the impact you make. That’s why we’re invested in your growth from day one—because the steps you take today define your tomorrow.

We are looking for a Staff Accountant to join our team—a role where your expertise will drive meaningful outcomes and your ambition will help shape what comes next. Here, you’ll collaborate with a dynamic team of professionals, united by a shared commitment to making a difference—for our clients, our communities, and one another.

Baker Tilly is a leading advisory and accounting firm dedicated to building better futures. With global reach and local roots, we combine the scale of a network with the trust of strong relationships. From audit and tax to consulting and specialist advisory services, we help clients navigate complexity and seize opportunity with clarity.

“There is no limit to the growth opportunities at Baker Tilly. We pride ourselves on promoting talent when we see it, and work with each professional to define what success means for them.”

Your role:

The Staff Accountant plays a key role in delivering exceptional client experience by producing high quality deliverables in a timely manner, providing professional accounting expertise in their areas of specialization and mentoring team members of less experience. They make positive contributions to practice development and process improvement initiatives and take responsibility for their ongoing individual development.

Client service delivery
  • Complete various Audit, Review, and Compilation engagements individually and as part of a team.
  • Review client accounting and financial records for accuracy and compliance with accounting standards, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Perform technical work in the office or in the field on assigned engagements or portions of engagements, under supervision.
  • Support complex areas of larger audit and review engagements.
  • Maintain responsibility for accuracy and completion of assigned work and related documentation.
  • Prepare draft review plans for supervisory assessment when leading an engagement.
  • Prepare individual and corporate tax returns, including HST returns.
  • Cooperate with colleagues and management on file and engagement planning.
  • Address engagement issues by consulting appropriate resources and **escalate relevant matters** to the engagement supervisor when necessary.
  • Respond to client needs and address concerns proactively.
  • Complete assignments within set timelines, budget, and specifications.
Client Relationships
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the client and their industry.
  • Provide reliable service to clients by responding promptly and maintaining accountability, integrity, and respect.
  • Assist with business development and goodwill efforts as required.
  • Identify prospects for additional products or services for existing clients and communicate these to the engagement supervisor.
Mentoring
  • Train and guide junior accountants and co-op students to support their development.
  • Give prompt, direct feedback to less experienced team members.
  • Oversee work performed by junior staff to reduce the need for extensive review by engagement supervisors.
  • Monitor the progress of all assigned engagements, including delegated tasks.
Practice and professional development
  • Contribute to project teams implementing firm policies and initiatives when requested.
  • Identify inefficient processes and suggest improvements.
  • Acquire knowledge of support systems, including tax software, computer systems, and firm standards.
  • Build experience in public accounting and work towards professional certification.
  • Meet individual profitability targets, business development, and career objectives.
  • Participate in activities to enhance engagement profitability.
  • Understand the firm's structure, operational processes, and financial factors.
  • Develop communication skills for effective interaction with colleagues and clients.
  • Collaborate across different teams within the firm.
  • Remain informed about current accounting practices and pursue opportunities to improve organizational efficiency and effectiveness.
What you bring to the table:
  • Postsecondary diploma or degree in accounting or related fields
  • Pursuit of CPA designation an asset
  • Minimum 1 year of recent accounting experience in a public accounting firm required.
  • Ability to take initiative for own learning and development
  • Interest in developing others
