Job description

The Strait Regional (0052) invites applications from qualified candidates for the posted vacancy. In accordance with the CUPE (3100) Collective Agreement, senior qualified candidates will be given preference. As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being, and overall success. The SRCE, supported by approximately 1,050 employees, strives to achieve its mission: “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable, and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing, and successful lifelong learners.” In 2024-2025, SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,981 students; and about 375 children attend pre-primary programs at 14 locations. Located in northeastern Nova Scotia, SRCE’s jurisdiction covers Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness, and Richmond counties, an area of roughly 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

Work Schedule: 8 hours/day

Journeyperson Plumber

Performs duties consistent with a certified journeyperson plumber. Acts as an active team member in maintenance, responsible for constructing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing systems across facilities operated by SRCE.

Role: Performs journey-level trades work in plumbing system construction, maintenance, and repair, with leadership in installation and project execution.

Responsibilities:

  • Builds, repairs, maintains, and installs plumbing systems including water, wastewater, and hydronic systems following standards and codes;
  • Assists in planning and coordinating building or capital projects, estimating materials and time;
  • Performs semi-skilled work and supports other trades as needed;
  • Ensures work complies with practices, design specs, codes, standards, and best practices;
  • Provides emergency response and corrective actions for urgent issues;
  • Maintains records of repairs, work orders, and inventory;
  • Coordinates with suppliers and contractors, manages supplies and vehicle inventory;
  • Completes and documents work orders, providing reports and recommendations;
  • Performs duties in accordance with policies, procedures, and safety regulations;
  • Trains and evaluates apprentices and staff, monitoring progress;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED);
  • Journeyperson plumber certification;
  • Minimum five years’ experience in plumbing and building maintenance;
  • Computer skills and experience;
  • Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license;
  • Physical and mechanical aptitude for manual tasks;
  • Strong communication and organizational skills;
  • Dexterity with manual and power tools;
  • Teamwork and ability to work independently.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Multi-trade certification (e.g., Steam Fitter/Pipefitter);
  • Experience with CMMS and HVAC systems;
  • Ability to troubleshoot systems and read P&ID diagrams.
