The Strait Regional (0052) invites applications from qualified candidates for the posted vacancy. As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being and overall success. The Strait Regional Centre for Education operates 20 schools with approximately 5,981 students; and approximately 375 children are attending pre-primary programs at 14 school locations. Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021). The Strait Regional Centre for Education is inviting applications for the casual position of Summer Literacy Day Camp Leader in Antigonish and Port Hawkesbury. Work Schedule: 35 hours per week

Rate: $21.00/hour

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Summer Literacy Day Camp Leader leads recreation programs for participants in lower elementary grades. They are the supervisor of the one camp counselor on site and are expected to be responsible for the day-to-day running of the camp. The leader designs activities within a planned curriculum, with the support of the camp counselor. Supports for persons with disabilities in programs may be required to develop a specific program plan. Other responsibilities include: daily duties such as greeting parents and participants, leading activities, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of participants, organizing equipment and supplies, preparing for activities, distributing and collecting permission slips for outings, organizing outings and special events, participating in staff meetings. Specific training will be required prior to the start date of the camp and will be provided as part of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
• At least one season/summer of experience working or volunteering with children in a recreational setting or equivalent experience (such as working with children in a school setting)
• Demonstrated program leadership skills
• Demonstrated conflict resolution skills
• Knowledge and understanding of Healthy Child Development
• Previous experience working with persons with disabilities an asset

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge, Abilities and Training
• Current certification in Emergency First Aid and Level C CPR an asset
