Job description

The Strait Regional Centre for Education invites applications from qualified candidates for the posted vacancy of Lead Early Childhood Educator. In accordance with the CUPE Collective Agreement, senior qualified candidates will be given preference.

The Strait Regional Centre for Education was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being, and overall success. The Centre operates 20 schools with approximately 5,981 students and 375 children attending pre-primary programs.

The Lead Early Childhood Educator falls within the CUPE Local 955 job classification. The work schedule is 7 hours a day, and the deadline for applications is October 10, 2025, at 11:59 pm.

Job Summary

The Lead ECE reports to the school Principal and is responsible for collaborating with Pre-primary staff to implement the Pre-primary Program using the Nova Scotia Early Learning Curriculum Framework.

Key Responsibilities
  • Creating an inviting, active, and dynamic learning environment that supports and includes all children;
  • Collaborating with Pre-primary staff to clarify roles and responsibilities and establish routines and procedures;
  • Observing children on a daily basis to learn more about them as individuals;
  • Delivering a uniquely creative curriculum that is responsive to the interests, developmental, and cultural needs of the participating children;
  • Being the primary point of contact for families and establishing relationships with them;
  • Welcoming and having open communication with families regarding their child’s experiences and the program offered;
  • Reflecting children’s lives in ongoing displays and celebrations throughout the year;
  • Supporting children’s development in the four key areas identified in the NSELCF;
  • Supporting social-emotional learning for young children and implementing positive behaviour guidance;
  • Working with the ECE to create documentation, individual portfolios, and pedagogical displays within the environment;
  • Working with Pre-primary staff to provide timely identification of and responses to children and families in need of additional supports and services;
  • Developing, implementing, and reviewing Routine Based Plans for children requiring additional supports;
  • Administering medication and working with families and community partners to support children with chronic medical conditions;
  • Providing nutritious snacks and working with the Principal, Pre-Primary Program Lead, and Early Years Programs to ensure the Pre-primary children are welcomed and part of the school community;
  • Participating in a comprehensive, ongoing evaluation of the Pre-primary Program via the Continuous Quality Improvement process;
  • Other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
  • A degree in early childhood education from a recognized educational institution with 3 years of recent experience working in a regulated early learning environment or Pre-primary;
  • A diploma in early childhood education from a recognized educational institution with 5 years of recent experience working in a regulated early learning environment or Pre-primary;
  • Experience with leadership in an early learning environment;
  • Possess an in-depth understanding of child growth and development and demonstrated knowledge and experience using a play-based pedagogy and child-centered, developmentally appropriate practices;
  • Ability to translate theory and best practices into action in early childhood settings;
  • Experience with developmentally appropriate observation, documentation, and authentic assessment strategies;
  • Experience working with children and families with diverse cultural backgrounds, experiences, and developmental needs;
  • Ability to create inclusive and responsive early learning environments that support the diverse and special needs of all children;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Computer skills suitable for report writing and internet application and research;
  • Current first aid certification.
