Job description

The Strait Regional (0052) invites applications from qualified candidates for the posted vacancy. About the Strait Regional Centre for Education

As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the SRCE was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being, and overall success. With approximately 1,050 employees, SRCE operates 20 schools with about 5,981 students, including 375 children in pre-primary programs across 14 locations. Located in northeastern Nova Scotia, SRCE's jurisdiction covers Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness, and Richmond counties, an area of approximately 11,000 km² with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

African Canadian Student Support Worker
Responsibilities and Relationships

Research shows that students who feel safe, accepted, and connected are more likely to succeed academically and socially. Building strong relationships among students, teachers, and staff is essential, especially considering the diverse experiences of African Nova Scotian students.

  • Monitor student attendance and relay relevant information to the office, maintaining records.
  • Support students by being a positive role model and fostering cultural identity.
  • Meet regularly with administration to provide updates and advice.
  • Follow the schedule assigned by administration.
  • Support students in developing self-esteem and success strategies.
  • Assist students with course selection and career planning, in collaboration with guidance counselors.
  • Coordinate with feeder schools for smooth student transitions.
  • Maintain communication with classroom teachers regarding student progress.
  • Support students during re-entry, suspensions, or absences, including transportation needs.
  • Access and utilize student data to understand learning needs.
  • Contribute to program planning and support cultural awareness initiatives.
  • Support parents/guardians at school events and meetings.
  • Submit end-of-day reports to the Regional Coordinator and school principal.
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and adhere to policies.
  • Participate in supervision, appraisal, and professional development.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary.
Special Assets
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive support for African traditional, spiritual, and cultural teachings.
  • Experience working with African Canadian communities and understanding their governance and community structures.
Qualifications

Essential:

  • Grade 12 plus post-secondary education.
  • Knowledge of educational issues related to learners.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills.
  • Ability to support learning across various curriculum settings.
  • Must be of African Canadian descent.

Desirable:

  • Experience with technology (word processing, internet, email).
  • Current certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.
