Job description

The Strait Regional (0052) invites applications from qualified candidates for the posted vacancy. As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being, and overall success. The SRCE, supported by approximately 1,050 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission: “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable, and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing, and successful lifelong learners.” In 2024-2025, SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,954 students; and about 375 children attend pre-primary programs at 14 locations. Located in northeastern Nova Scotia, SRCE’s jurisdiction covers Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness, and Richmond counties, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometers with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

Work Schedule: 7 hours/day

Role: The Student Support Worker will support students who are racially, culturally, and socially at risk. Their primary role involves monitoring and supporting these students and their families, and acting as a liaison between the school and the African Nova Scotia community. The goal is to help these students achieve positive educational experiences, succeed, and remain in school.

Responsibilities:

  1. Become familiar with students' needs, and, in cooperation with staff, establish methods for monitoring progress and communicating with families;
  2. Establish personal contact with parents via phone or home visits as needed;
  3. Monitor student attendance and assist students in accessing community supports;
  4. Maintain ongoing journals for all students;
  5. Promote increased contact among students, parents, and teachers;
  6. Collaborate with guidance counselors, students, and parents to discuss educational goals and course options;
  7. Act as an advocate when necessary;
  8. Perform additional duties as deemed appropriate by the Principal, in consultation with the Coordinator of African Canadian Education Services;
  9. Participate in Parent-Teacher Conference days;
  10. Other related duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 completion;
  • Knowledge of educational issues related to student learning;
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to support students across various curriculum settings;
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain prior to employment;
  • African descent.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Relevant post-secondary education;
  • Experience with technology (word processing, internet, email);
  • Current certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention;
