Job description

The Strait Regional (0052) invites applications from qualified candidates for the posted vacancy. In accordance with the CUPE (3100) Collective Agreement, senior qualified candidates will be given preference. As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being, and overall success. The SRCE, supported by approximately 1,050 employees, aims to empower children and youth within safe, equitable, and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing, and successful lifelong learners. In 2023-2024, SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,954 students, including about 369 children attending pre-primary programs at 14 locations. Located in northeastern Nova Scotia, SRCE’s jurisdiction covers the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness, and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

Work Schedule: 8 hours/day

BUILDING OPERATOR
Responsibilities:
  1. Ensure proper instructional environment and building safety through the use of energy management and safety systems, in accordance with established practices and standards;
  2. Oversee janitorial staff to ensure duties are performed;
  3. Carry out a preventive maintenance program as established by SRCE;
  4. Inspect all areas of the school (including interior, exterior, and grounds) regularly, perform repairs, and coordinate janitorial assistance;
  5. Ensure proper utilization and control of building materials, tools, equipment, and supplies;
  6. Keep accurate records of maintenance, work orders, purchase orders, employee time sheets, inventory, snow removal, security logs, etc.;
  7. Coordinate physical requirements for school rentals, events, and activities;
  8. Conduct installation, maintenance, and repairs of the school plant;
  9. Assist in after-hours emergencies and be available for weekend coverage as required;
  10. Perform duties in compliance with policies, procedures, occupational health and safety laws, and evacuation plans;
  11. Other related duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications:
  1. Red Seal journeyperson certification in a building trade or third class power engineer license; and five years’ experience in maintenance, operation, and repair of building systems, including HVAC systems;
  2. OR
  3. SRCE equivalency for Red Seal plus five years’ experience, including courses in building environmental systems, a practicum, and custodial experience within SRCE;
  4. Experience with building software, DDC controls, and energy management systems;
  5. Strong oral and written communication skills;
  6. Organizational skills;
  7. Knowledge of OHS procedures and regulations;
  8. Computer skills;
  9. Current WHMIS, CPR, and First Aid certifications or willingness to obtain them;
  10. Ability to manage building maintenance and emergencies effectively.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience supervising janitorial and trades staff in a team environment.
