The Strait Regional (0052) invites applications from qualified candidates for the posted vacancy. As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being, and overall success. The Strait Regional Centre for Education, with the support of approximately 1,050 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing and successful lifelong learners.” In 2022-2023, the SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,931 students; and approximately 369 children are attending pre-primary programs at 14 school locations. Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness, and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 8 hours/day

Effective Dates: 09/25/2023

ROLE: Performs work up to and including journey level trades in motor vehicle maintenance and repairs, including the carrying out of regular vehicular repairs and preventive maintenance schedule for the bus fleet.

Responsibilities:

  1. Establish and carry out repair work and preventive maintenance programs in cooperation with the Immediate Supervisor and ensuring that the necessary supplies and equipment are in stock to implement such programs.
  2. Report to the Immediate Supervisor issues and concerns impacting on the safety of the garage staff, bus staff, or student transportation.
  3. Certify all repair and inspection reports.
  4. Complete all assigned work orders, and record hours and materials used.
  5. Assist the Immediate Supervisor in the preparation of personnel reports as required.
  6. Report concerns and/or problems with the operation of the school bus communication system.
  7. Schedule buses for preventative maintenance servicing, including those assigned to remote sites.
  8. Ensure a clean, safe work environment according to board policies and procedures.
  9. Maintain the safe operation of all equipment used in the bus garage.
  10. Perform all mechanical duties as assigned.
  11. Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Must have Bus & Transport Mechanic's Certification or minimum 2nd year apprentice.
  2. Must have a valid Nova Scotia Driver's License.
  3. Must be willing and able to obtain a Class 2B-2C or Class 1B-1C license with air brake endorsement.
  4. Must own mechanical tools for use in the shop.
  5. Must have knowledge and experience in diesel repair and bus or transport maintenance.
  6. Must have the ability to promote harmony and good working relations within the fleet maintenance team.
  7. Must have the ability to maintain records in an orderly manner and complete reports as required by the Motor Carrier Branch of the Utilities and Review Board, and by SRCE management.
  8. Must be able to carry out mechanical repairs as required.
  9. Must ensure that a safe and orderly work environment is maintained, and remain current with all applicable safety-related requirements.
