Position: Sr Underwriter Construction

Location: Hybrid Toronto

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced professional to support the Canadian Commercial Insurance Construction Market under the leadership of our Construction Practice Leader. This position will focus on underwriting master and project solutions for middle market and domestic risk management in the Civil Infrastructure, Traditional Energy, and Renewable Energy sectors.

In this role, you will report directly to the Construction Practice Leader and be responsible for developing strategies, supporting product creation, and executing go-to-market plans to drive growth with retail distribution partners.

You will identify, nurture, and underwrite new opportunities and cross-sell within existing business lines, shaping our portfolio's strategic direction by establishing relationships within retail networks. Additionally, you will help maintain underwriting performance, stay informed on market trends, and contribute to building a highly efficient team.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate should have experience in a Commercial Construction practice at a top-tier insurance carrier, with a proven track record in risk selection, underwriting, and maintaining relationships with distribution partners. A thorough understanding of underwriting principles, policy forms, and product development in Civil Infrastructure, Traditional Energy, and Renewable Energy sectors is essential. Strong communication skills, executive presence, and the ability to influence in a matrix environment are also required.

Work Profile

This role is based in Toronto with a hybrid model (3 days in-office, 2 remote). Travel to industry and company events is expected.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Support the establishment of the Canadian Commercial Construction Practice in partnership with leadership.
  2. Assess and underwrite risk for construction-related accounts to ensure portfolio profitability.
  3. Manage and monitor existing accounts, providing analysis and reporting.
  4. Develop and refine underwriting guidelines and policies with stakeholders.
  5. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  6. Provide thought leadership on emerging risks, trends, and market opportunities.
  7. Research market conditions to support sound risk management.
  8. Build and maintain relationships with brokers, agents, and reinsurers.
  9. Monitor underwriting performance and implement improvements.
  10. Collaborate with actuarial, claims, and finance departments for cohesive underwriting strategies.

Required Education / Experience

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Technical underwriting experience in Civil Infrastructure, Traditional Energy, and Renewable Energy sectors.
  • Experience establishing and expanding retail distribution relationships.
  • Market awareness of current dynamics and macroeconomic impacts.
  • Strong analytical, leadership, and communication skills.
