As a subsidiary of L3Harris Technologies and within the Integrated Mission Systems Segment, the WESCAM division develops the most advanced optical sensor and targeting systems for global defense and military sectors, National Security, Search & Rescue and Airborne law enforcement agencies. From long-range covert surveillance missions to search and rescue operations, our MX-series systems, and the mission systems solutions they are a part of, produce stabilized high-magnification electro-optical and infrared images from airborne, marine and ground based platforms, enabling our customers to see first and act first.

About the Role

Our software teams work directly with our optics and hardware teams – developing code that manages all of our systems controllers and actuators, telephoto lenses or targeting & tracking systems - and in particular, code that allows those captured images to be defined and managed. We develop advanced real time software for various applications and processors, including new payloads like complex imagers, laser illuminators & targeting designators, range finders and trackers. We develop the embedded controls and user interfaces for complex electro-mechanical systems including remote I/O subsystems, custom lens controllers, and advanced video processing features.

Software at WESCAM is the heart of our MX-series systems and the glue that pulls together state of the art mechanical, electrical and optical features of our designs. Each system and mission offers unique challenges so our software has to be flexible while meeting challenging performance requirements that push the boundaries of what is possible with advanced imaging systems. Primary Responsibilities

1. Design, develop and validate software in C/C++ for real-time control, communication, and signal/image processing systems
2. Design, develop and validate Embedded Linux kernel modules and device drivers, including board bring-up and peripheral control
3. Optimize real-time algorithms and image/video processing pipelines for performance, determinism, and low-latency behavior
4. Follow trends in industry and academia related to signal/image processing (e.g., GPU acceleration, computer vision, machine learning, etc.)
5. Produce technical documentation as needed to document your project work
6. Participate in design and code reviews for your projects
7. Contribute to department level improvement initiatives such as code refactoring, test development and establishing design & coding guidelines
8. Mentor junior team members on technical aspects of their work
9. Provide technical leadership to projects or initiatives

Recommended Skills & Knowledge

1. Strong proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems, including low-level hardware interaction and memory management
2. Experience developing Embedded Linux software, including kernel modules, device drivers, and real-time system tuning
3. Solid understanding of real-time system design, including deterministic behavior, interrupt handling, and timing constraints
4. Familiarity with digital signal/image processing concepts and their practical implementation on embedded platforms
5. Exposure to computer vision (e.g., image segmentation, object tracking) or computer graphics (e.g., rendering pipelines, GPU shaders)
6. Familiarity with inter-process communication, messaging protocols, or embedded middleware (e.g., DDS, RTI, ZeroMQ)
7. Experience with “tools of the trade” such as IDEs/editors, debuggers, compilation toolchains and source control management systems
8. Familiarity with both Windows and Linux as host operating systems
9. Familiarity with Agile software development practices
10. Good communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Skills & Knowledge

1. Real-time rendering pipeline development, including lighting, shading, and post-processing effects
2. GPU programming and shader development (HLSL, GLSL, or compute shaders)
3. Familiarity with tools like NVIDIA Nsight, PIX, or similar GPU profilers
4. Background in computer graphics, computer vision, or simulation systems

Desired Education and Experiences

1. University degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline.
   • Relevant Masters or postgraduate degree is an asset
2. Preferred 6+ years of software design and implementation experience
