Job Description and Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly qualified Senior Research Engineer to lead our tubular and flat product development research. In this technically challenging position, you will generate and apply ferrous physical metallurgy knowledge to design, evaluate, and optimize alloying strategies and processing schedules for our steel products with a focus primarily on continuous casting, hot rolling, and heat treatment processes. You will be responsible for planning, managing, communicating, and reporting on laboratory experimentation, metallurgical modelling, pilot scale trials, and production trials at EVRAZ NA Research and Development, EVRAZ NA production mills, and at other partner facilities.

  • Technical project leadership for research and development (R&D) activities related to the production and processing of hot rolled steels and heat-treated products for tubular products (line pipe, oil country tubular goods (OCTG)) and flat products
  • Design, execution, analysis, and reporting of experiments and trials
  • Development and implementation of data models and metallurgical models related to continuous casting, thermomechanical controlled processing (TMCP), and heat treatments of steel
  • Establish priorities through communication with internal stakeholders including R&D Program Managers, Sales, Production, QA, and Technical Services
  • Collaborate with external stakeholders including universities, government laboratories and other independent labs
  • Provide project task instructions and guidance to R&D staff, technologists, and students
  • Support R&D laboratory equipment (e.g., Gleeble) use, development, operations, and maintenance
  • Effective communication of R&D findings, results, and updates for audiences of varying technical levels
  • Complete and maintain company-sponsored H2S Alive training (the Regina R&D facility houses an H2S corrosion testing facility)

Requirements

  • M.Sc. in Metallurgical or Materials Engineering, preference will be given to candidates with Ph.D. and strong knowledge of ferrous (steel) physical metallurgy
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant industrial and/or research experience
  • Knowledgeable in steel microstructure evolution during continuous casting, hot rolling, cooling, and heat treatments
  • Experience with experimental methodologies for the characterization of steel microstructure evolution
  • Experience with metallurgical modelling and/or related software (e.g., Thermo-Calc, JMatPro, etc.)
  • Experience with statistical design of experiments and data analysis tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB, R, Minitab, etc.)
  • Knowledge of standards and specifications of line pipe, OCTG and plate products as well as mechanical tests, fracture tests, corrosion tests, and characterization methods is an asset.
  • Strong English communication, presentation, and writing skills
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional and dynamic team environment
  • Ability to travel to various company, partner, or customer facilities outside of the work location will be expected and the ability to freely travel between the US and Canada is required
