The ideal candidate will design, test, and support advanced automated equipment, lead mechanical projects, and collaborate across cross-functional teams to ensure safety, quality, and on-time delivery. Occasional travel is required, and a PE designation or eligibility is expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 8–10 years of relevant mechanical engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for accreditation.

emergiTEL is hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer for our client in the healthcare and nuclear technology industry. This is a Permanent role. Compensation: $120,000 – $140,000/year. Location: Ottawa, ON

Job Description (English)
  • Design, test, commission, and support advanced automated industrial equipment (production irradiators).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Project Managers, Design & Drafting, Controls) to deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Apply in-depth engineering principles, standards, and best practices.
  • Lead or contribute to the design and manufacture of irradiator components and assemblies, including:
    • Coordinating manufacturing activities
    • Performing safety analyses and engineering calculations
    • Developing specifications
    • Executing testing and compiling results
    • Generating technical reports and driving continuous improvement
  • Lead mechanical engineering projects with accountability for budget, timelines, and functional outcomes.
  • Participate in design reviews to ensure compliance with engineering, quality, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform root cause analysis using rigorous problem-solving techniques to resolve field issues.
  • Stay current on requirements for dry and wet storage panoramic irradiators.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 8–10 years of relevant mechanical engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for accreditation.
Skills and Competencies
  • Strong expertise in mechanical system design and engineering analysis.
  • Proficiency in stress/strength analysis, tolerance stack-up, and engineering calculations.
  • Experience with design, testing, and troubleshooting of mechanical/electro-mechanical systems.
  • Excellent verbal communication; ability to explain complex technical and regulatory topics to non-technical audiences.
  • Sound technical judgment in complex, non-routine decision-making.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership, guidance, and review for engineers and technicians.
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills.
Assets
  • Experience in nuclear or other highly regulated/high-reliability environments.
  • Background in automated or industrial equipment design (e.g., material handling, robotics, packaging, irradiation systems).
Additional Requirements
  • Occasional overtime to meet project deadlines.
  • International travel (approximately 10–60 days per year; valid Canadian passport required).
  • Completion of all required Nuclear Energy Worker training and certifications.
