What you will do

Reporting to the Executive Vice-President and Chief Strategy and People Officer, the Senior Legal Counsel, Corporate, acts as the counsel for complex contract negotiations, legal advice, and associated risk management in the areas of corporate and medico-legal law.

The successful incumbent will play a key risk mitigation function for TOH. The Senior Legal Counsel, Corporate will provide expert and effective counsel; manage external counsel relationships; and identify, monitor, and manage potential areas of legal vulnerability and risk. Senior Legal Counsel will be expected to develop strong relationships to drive performance and provide a disciplined, well balanced, and values-based approach to anticipating, mitigating and managing legal risks and seizing opportunities. The role will deliver expert legal counsel to key internal stakeholders, including senior leadership, to execute on legal and regulatory requirements relating to TOH\'s organizational objectives.

Senior Legal Counsel is a resource for staff on a wide range of corporate and medico-legal related issues on a day-to-day basis. The position also supports the standardization of due diligence and related policy development, contract drafting and negotiation, claims management.

  • Experience working in healthcare or health-related environment.
Seniority and requirements
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field of study;
  • Juris Doctor Degree (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB);
  • Call to the Ontario Bar and member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario;
  • Experience with (CanLII, WestlawNext, LexisNexis Quicklaw, Brown, and Beatty, etc.);
  • Seven (7) years of progressive experience in consulting, advising, analyzing and problem-solving legal matters in the field of corporate and medico-legal law;
  • Five (5) years of experience managing, coaching, mentoring, and leading staff;
  • Superior knowledge of corporate and medico-legal law policies and procedures, and related legislation (i.e. Human Rights Code, Public Hospitals Act, Coroner\'s Act, Mental Health Act, Regulated Health Professionals Act, Labour Relations Act.);
  • Superior knowledge of Legal principles and framework associated with all aspects of corporate and medico-legal law;
  • Knowledge of legislation, regulations, policies, procedures, and other legal requirements affecting public hospitals and the broader public sector;
  • Excellent organizational skills, prioritization, and capable of managing competing priorities / meeting deadlines;
  • Confidence, diplomacy, service-oriented, discretion, sound judgment;
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills including exceptional negotiation skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills, and group facilitation skills and ability to develop others, including providing effective feedback and coaching to others;
  • Strong conceptual thinking and analytical abilities;
  • Ability to analyze problems, develop and assess solutions and provide risk management assessments to ensure legal and regulatory compliance, translating complex compliance and regulatory standards into material that can be understood by a diverse audience;
  • Proficiency in the use and maintenance of computer database systems and data analysis;
  • Ability to establish and develop effective working relationships with others and foster collaboration between diverse groups in order to drive positive change.
