As a Senior HR Consultant, you will provide consultation, interpretation and direct occupational health and safety services to a portfolio of divisional clients at a senior level. In this position, the Senior HR Consultant will participate on a team of human resources professionals providing expertise and consultation to managers and employees in all aspects of Occupational Health and Safety.

What will you do?

  • Provide a leadership and coordination function in the area of occupational health and safety, including incident investigation and joint health and safety committee development, training and certification
  • Responsible for the timely and effective delivery of program services to support business, divisional and corporate objectives
  • Assist in results oriented human resource planning with assigned divisions on service priorities, service standards and objectives
  • Provide consultation and guidance, including compliance with legislation as well as collective agreements, policies, programs and processes
  • Participate on task forces, corporate initiatives, committees, and grievance arbitrations
  • Assist and/or lead in the development of policies, programs and procedures as related to occupational health and safety
  • Responsible for the planning, advocating, promoting and monitoring of safe work practices
  • Provide guidance on an ongoing basis to management staff on all occupational health and safety matters
  • Prepare regular monthly summaries highlighting the progress of health and safety matters
  • Serve as a mentor/coach to consultants and program support staff in providing leadership, developing recommendations, implementing solutions and ensuring quality in service delivery
  • Provide a quality control function as it relates to work planning, identifying activities, setting output targets/deliverables

What do you bring to the role?

  • Considerable experience in an occupational health and safety function in a major unionized public and/or private sector organization
  • Post-secondary education or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience in a relevant discipline
  • Experience providing mentoring and/or work oversight to teams
  • Excellent facilitation/presentation skills and ability to train effectively, with various levels of staff within the organization
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively develop and cultivate productive working relationships with staff at all levels of the organization, including managers, employees, union officials and the public
  • Strong project management skills with ability to organize, control and coordinate a variety of activities in a fast paced environment
  • Strong ability to identify business needs and opportunities for change/improvement, as well as initiating, coordinating and managing the implementation of solutions and preventive measures to potential issues
  • Strong problem solving skills, ability to exercise discretion, sound judgement and work with a high degree of autonomy
  • A thorough knowledge of employment and related legislation (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act, Human Rights Code, and Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, contractual obligations and sound human resources practices
  • Knowledge of ergonomic and occupational hygiene principles are an asset
