Job description

Cameco is seeking a senior engineer, operational technology (OT) to play a critical role in supporting our uranium mining, milling, refining, and fuel services operations. Based in Saskatoon and reporting to the chief engineer, OT and research, this role offers a rare opportunity to work at the intersection of operations, engineering, and technology. You will provide hands‑on technical expertise and leaderships while helping to set the direction, standards, and governance for OT systems across multiple sites and leading new technology-driven projects. This is a highly visible role suited for an experienced engineer who thrives on delivering results, making decisive technical calls, collaborating across disciplines, and navigating change in a complex, regulated industrial environment. In this senior role, you will balance strategy with execution, acting as both a technical expert and a trusted partner to site and corporate teams.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the development and deployment of enterprise OT standards, practices, and procedures, ensuring consistency, reliability, and scalability across Cameco’s operating sites.
  • Drive step‑change improvements in controls systems, including:
  • OT/IT architecture and governance;
  • PLC and DCS programming practices (DeltaV, Foxboro, Rockwell);
  • HMI and alarm management standards;
  • Control loop improvement;
  • Asset and lifecycle management for control systems; and
  • OT networking and system reliability.
  • Lead and contribute to corporate OT initiatives, working closely with Technical Services, Business Technology Services (BTS), and Operations.
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement new OT capabilities and projects, including:
  • Enterprise operational data strategies (AVEVA / OSIsoft PI); and
  • Automation and digital enablement across mine and mill environments.
  • Provide hands‑on technical leadership to support critical OT systems at operating sites, helping teams resolve issues and improve performance.
  • Make sound, timely technical decisions while balancing risk, safety, reliability, and operational impact.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams and external consultants to deliver practical, value‑focused solutions.
  • Build strong working relationships with site teams while maintaining a corporate, enterprise mindset.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable guidance for a range of audiences.
  • Plan and organize work to meet competing priorities and timelines in a dynamic, operational environment.
  • Adapt approaches as technologies, site needs, and business priorities evolve.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to engineers and technologists, supporting capability development across the organization.

Required:

  • bachelor’s degree in electrical/electronics, computer engineering, or a related engineering discipline;
  • seven – 12 years of progressive experience with instrumentation, control systems, and OT;
  • P.Eng. (professional engineer) designation and eligibility for registration with APEGS;
  • strong experience with:
  • automation platforms such as DeltaV, Foxboro, and Rockwell;
  • PLC, SCADA, HMI, and DCS systems;
  • industrial communication protocols including Modbus, Ethernet/IP, and OPC;
  • working experience with:
  • AVEVA / OSIsoft PI systems and time‑series data analytics;
  • process control design, modelling, and implementation of advanced process control strategies;
  • control loop performance monitoring and optimization (e.g., PlantESP);
  • practical understanding of OT/IT networking, including VLANs, firewalls, switching, and industrial cybersecurity standards;
  • proven ability to deliver complex automation or digital projects from concept through implementation;
  • strong communicator with the ability to confidently present ideas and influence outcomes; and
  • willingness to travel occasionally to operating sites in northern Saskatchewan and Ontario.

Recommended:

  • experience in mining operations, including milling and underground environments;
  • advanced process control integration within DeltaV, Foxboro, or other SCADA platforms;
  • knowledge of mineral or chemical processing;
  • research and development experience in embedded systems is a plus;
  • experience with software development tools (e.g., Python, C/C++) is a plus; and
  • professional certifications such as CAP (Certified Automation Professional – ISA), CSE (Control Systems Engineer – NCEES), or PMP.

Conditions of Employment:

  • pre-employment substance test.

Cameco is proud to offer a competitive total reward package which includes:

  • flexible health, drug, dental, and vision plan with a health spending and personal spending account;
