About the Role:

Grade Level (for internal use): 10

The Team:

Data Services Engineering is a team in the CESS (Cloud Engineering & Shared Services) in the Market Intelligence division of S&P Global. The Data Services Engineering Team within CESS is designed to provide engineering, enablement, and operational support across data technologies. The team will drive strong capabilities and operational stability measures to ensure data technology health, performance, security, and cost optimized solutions to run in the cloud without the high overhead typically associated with data technology teams.

Responsibilities and Impact:

As an Engineer III / Database Engineering you will:

  1. Support, administer, manage, and tune multi-terabyte database systems.
  2. Ensure any data replication latency is investigated and resolved quickly.
  3. Automate tasks to improve efficiency and quality of the team and infrastructure.
  4. Manage periodic database/software releases for QA, Pre-Production, Production, and DR as part of the overall SDLC.
  5. Deploy and maintain database instances including configuration enhancements, patches/hotfixes, database engine upgrades, hardware/storage migrations, etc.
  6. Solve non-routine problems and use cost/benefit analysis to determine the best solution.
  7. Troubleshoot database engine and query performance issues in real-time.
  8. Work with IT Server Management and other groups and ensure that all issues, incidents, and problems are resolved in a timely manner.
  9. Participate in and coordinate projects with other teams within Operations as well as other peer groups like Development and QA teams.
  10. Leverage existing methods and procedures on new or special assignments.
  11. Periodically review current processes and suggest improvements as new tools/methods are discovered.
  12. Contribute to best-in-class product support resources including run books, tools, monitoring processes, and knowledge bases.
  13. Support database backups/refreshes in non-prod environments.
  14. Participate in weekly, Tier-3 Support on-call rotation.
  15. Support cloud, virtualized, and on-prem database infrastructure.

What We’re Looking For:

Basic Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Engineering or equivalent experience.
  2. 5+ years of hands-on database administration, support, and performance tuning experience.
  3. Must have extensive experience in MS SQL Server.
  4. Some familiarity/experience with AWS.
  5. Proficient in database support, administration, performance tuning, and database monitoring.
  6. Experience with Transactional Replication and Log Shipping.
  7. Basic knowledge of PowerShell (or other scripting/program language).
  8. Excellent communication skills, with strong verbal and writing proficiencies.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience with additional RDMS like NoSQL, SOLR, Vertica, and PostgreSQL.
  2. Understanding of Database Mirroring, Availability Groups, and Windows Clustering.
  3. AWS Certified Solutions Architect.
  4. Ability to troubleshoot problems involving Client Libraries (like ADO.NET), Operating Systems, Network and Storage.
  5. Experience in a start-up, Agile, or Dev Ops environment.
  6. ITIL V3 Foundation Certified.
