LNG Canada is seeking a senior commercial lawyer to provide timely, cost-effective legal advice and practical support across commercial and procurement matters. The role includes leading negotiations, drafting, interpreting, and advising on agreements for LNG Canada.

The successful candidate will mentor teams, manage multiple client groups, and ensure alignment with policies and standards while collaborating with joint venture partners and First Nations where applicable.

Qualifications

  • Membership in the Law Society of British Columbia, the Law Society of Alberta or equivalent, or eligible for admission.
  • 10+ years at the bar.
  • Significant senior-level experience negotiating and drafting commercial agreements.
  • Knowledge of the LNG Canada Project is an asset.
  • Strong influencing, negotiation and facilitation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to work with diverse cultural groups within a team.

Responsibilities

  • Provide subject matter expert legal support in commercial and procurement matters, including leading negotiations with counterparties, governments, First Nations, suppliers and other third parties.
  • Protect LNG Canada's rights and reputation in all contractual arrangements while delivering practical legal solutions.
  • Provide training and education for the LNGC business on key legal matters as required.
  • Occasionally retain and manage outside counsel with oversight.
  • Align activities with LNG Canada’s Policies and Standards.
  • Support governance processes in the LNG Canada Joint Venture Agreement and ancillary agreements.

About the Role

LNG Canada is seeking a senior commercial lawyer to provide professional, timely, cost effective and practical legal advice and support to LNG Canada, primarily in relation to commercial and procurement matters. The role will include being the lead lawyer in negotiating, drafting, interpreting and providing strategic advice in relation to agreements for LNG Canada.

You will use your expertise to:
  • Provide subject matter expert legal support in the commercial and procurement areas, including leading legal negotiations with commercial counterparties, governments, First Nations, suppliers and other third parties in relation to the ownership and operation of the LNG facility, power generation facilities, pipelines and marine facilities.
  • Protect the rights and reputation of LNG Canada in all commercial and contractual arrangements while developing and implementing practical legal solutions.
  • Provide training and education for the LNGC business on key legal matters as required.
  • Occasionally retain and instruct outside counsel with managerial support.
  • Play a key role to ensure alignment with LNG Canada’s Policies and Standards.
  • Deal with multiple client groups simultaneously and prioritize conflicting matters appropriately; working effectively within the LNG Canada Legal team, and integrating well with lawyers representing the joint venture owners.
  • Support the governance processes provided in the LNG Canada Joint Venture Agreement and its ancillary agreements.
To be successful, you will have:
  • Membership in the Law Society of British Columbia, the Law Society of Alberta or equivalent or eligible for admission, with 10+ years at the bar.
  • Significant work experience at a senior level in negotiating and drafting commercial agreements.
  • Knowledge of the LNG Canada Project would be an asset.
  • Strong influencing, negotiation and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to function at a high level within a team setting with strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong grasp of legal as well as business issues, industry developments and legal, social and political trends that may have an impact on LNG Canada.
  • Demonstrated ability to find creative and practical solutions to legal and commercial issues, within acceptable legal and risk frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly explain legal risks and develop sound mitigation strategies, including drafting with appropriate understanding and interpretation of commercial intentions.
  • Excellent legal and commercial judgment in sensitive areas and on difficult issues.
  • Ability to develop and sustain relationships with business contacts, particularly at senior levels of the organization, and with stakeholders having diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to deal with a high workload, including working on a number of issues in parallel.
  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written, with excellent English drafting and negotiating skills.
