Job summary

Classic Fire + Life Safety in Ontario is seeking a skilled Sprinkler Service Fitter to join our team. You will install, service, inspect, repair, and maintain fire protection systems across facilities, ensuring compliance with NFPA-13, NFPA-25, and AHJ requirements.

The role requires strong problem-solving on-site, safe work practices, and flexibility including after-hours on-call rotation. Local 853 membership and a Journeyperson license are highly valued.

Responsibilities

Job description

A Sprinkler Service Fitter is a team oriented individual responsible for the installation, service, inspections, repairs, and preventative maintenance of various fire protection systems, including but not limited to wet, dry, pre-action, and suppression systems, as well as fire pumps and backflow devices. The Sprinkler Service fitter will participate in necessary training to remain updated with most recent codes and expand their knowledge. (Ex: Fire Pump 1-2-3, Backflow, inspection & testing, Etc. Training/Courses)

Task & Responsibilities:

Inspections

• Inspect various fire protection systems throughout different facilities as per NFPA-25 and local codes/regulations to ensure they are operating as design, free of damage/leaks/obstructions and ensure they provide adequate protection for the hazard level.
• Provide a detailed description of deficiencies found with full solutions and material lists, using the provided reporting software.
• Testing of these systems requires a comprehensive knowledge of how they operate and the purpose and function of all system components. Inspectors should be well versed in troubleshooting issues while on site to ensure the proper repairs are suggested and issues that come up during testing are quickly and properly resolved to limit downtime.
• Navigating on-site issues and managing their time efficiently while ensuring a thorough inspection.
• A strong understanding of the relevant fire codes is necessary to ensure the inspections are being completed as required by customers, their insurance providers and the AHJ.

Service, repairs, and preventative maintenance

• A service fitter should be comfortable servicing, maintaining, and repairing all aspects of fire protection equipment/system.
• Relocating and adding sprinkler heads
• Repairing or modifying sprinkler systems
• Repairing or replacing sprinkler system components
• Completing internal alarm valve and pipe assessments
• Completing Hydrostatic testing of Fire Department Connections
• Completing Air leakage testing of dry/preaction systems
• Troubleshooting various sprinkler system issues and providing thorough solutions with material as needed.

Service Work

• Sprinkler Fitters can attend a wide range of service calls where it may be necessary to address/diagnose issues with varying components of the system.
• Identify and provide effective solutions and complete the repairs in a timely manner.
• Communicate with customers effectively and ensure the customer is receiving valuable quality service.
• Be part of an on-call rotation for their designated after-hours time frame. While on call, the fitter is responsible for responding to after hours service calls for their specific region and independently providing the necessary solutions required for various situations.

Installation

• Install sprinkler components as per NFPA-13, Local regulations, and AHJ
• Ensure that the work is performed safely and in accordance with CFLS’s safe work procedures as well as site specific safety regulations.
• Create Weekly Progress Report with construction supervisor and submit weekly
• Ensure timely submission of installation crew’s weekly time sheets (1st workday of workweek)
• Establish contact with customer’s site personnel (general contractor, trades, vendors, etc.).
• Obtain approval for lay down areas and on-site storage
• Check work areas, tools, and equipment for safety concerns
• Attend job meetings as required.
• Coordinate installation conflicts and work areas with other trades.
• Identify changes to the original scope of work and communicate with the project team to appropriately address the changes.
• Control site inventory and track material.
• Maintain a two-week look-ahead. Anticipate installation activities and ensure:
  • Material is complete and on-site
  • Required tools and equipment are available
  • Installation is coordinated with site trades
  • Coordinate with owner’s representative in existing facilities
• Schedule efficient use of equipment.
• Upon activation of a system, notify the GC or property owner of emergency shut down and draining procedures.
• Schedule tests with AHJ and ensure signoff and acceptance of authorization to leave in service is returned to the project manager.
• Conduct weekly toolbox talks
• Collect and review daily JHA’s
• Collect and review inspections reports (PPE, fall protection, ladder, etc.)
• Maintain daily logs including RFI and change order follow-up
• Provide technical assistance and mentorship for installation team
• Review installation quality and document deficiencies for remediation

Qualifications:

• A member of local 853 in good standing
• Have a valid 427-A Journeyperson licenses (Sprinkler and Fire Protection Installer)
• Have valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
• Have excellent communication and written skills
• Ability to work flexible hours
• Ability to work with provided hardware and software
• Ability to adhere to, implement, and always follow safety guidelines and procedures.
• Strong organizational skills, positive attitude, and an ability to learn quickly
• Sprinkler Service experience is an asset
• Security clearance is an asset
• Follow verbal and written instructions
• Capable of performing physical labour to include carrying and moving equipment and tools weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Majority of work all above head
• Ability to work in unusual and sometimes difficult positions such as climbing ladders, scaffolding and high lift equipment, working within ducts, crawl spaces, above ceilings, etc.
• Read and understand construction blueprints, diagrams, and specifications used in installation activities
• Abide by the company’s policies and procedures
• Participate in company’s trainings and meetings as required
• Approval for all human resource related matters (ie. holidays, leave of absence, letter of employment history).
