The Spiritual Health Practitioner works collaboratively within inter-professional teams in Providence Care to enhance quality of life through psychosociospiritual therapeutic approaches to care. Working within the approach to care which embraces both Person and Family Centered Care and Recovery, the Spiritual Health Practitioner enhances and facilitates the spiritual health of patients / residents / clients and their families as they mobilize spiritual health resources available to them for well-being, given the current circumstances and transitions in their lives. The Spiritual Health Practitioner supports persons and families as they develop hopeful goals for the future (which may include Advance Care Planning and/or End of Life preparation) and enables meaningful spiritual health experiences that strengthen personal dignity, values and identity. The Spiritual Health Practitioner engages people of all beliefs, respecting and offering compassion for diverse belief systems and world views.

Skills And Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Religious, Theological or Pastoral studies
  • Certification as Certified Spiritual Care Practitioner and/or Certified Psychospiritual Therapist with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC), or in process of completing certification
  • Registration with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, or in process of completing registration
  • Two-years of related spiritual health clinical practice experience
  • Evidence of on-going good standing with one’s own faith community and mandate for ministry within that faith community
  • Assurance that one is not under an Ethics Committee investigation with Canadian Association for Spiritual Care or an investigation under the Professional Misconduct Regulation of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario

Position Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive spiritual health assessments and develop appropriate spiritual health care plans.
  • Initiate empathic spiritual health support and interventions that help to mobilize the spiritual resources for recovery of health and well-being or to prepare for end of life
  • Ensure opportunities for appropriate rituals and ceremonies are provided in line with the beliefs of patients / residents / clients and/or families
  • Participate in consultations with inter-professional teams that ensure spiritual health perspectives are included in the comprehensive care plans for the patient / client / resident
  • Promote education about current understandings of spiritual health for patients / residents / clients and families
