Job description

KEY FUNCTION:
Responsible for coordinating and implementing spiritual care services; providing consultation,
and mission expertise. Assists in integrating the healing aspects of our mission into the
continuum of care. The coordinator will emphasize the foundational principles and core values
of our health care philosophy, ensuring they are integrated into the organization’s practices and
upholding our mission.

REPORTING:
Under the general direction of the Chief Human Resources Officer – Director, Employee and
Labour Relations.

DUTIES:
1. Provide leadership and guidance to ensure the integration of mission, vision and values
throughout the organization.
2. Coordinate Spiritual Care Services
3. Serves as an advocate for spiritual and religious care needs of patients/residents, families,
staff and volunteers.
4. Attend appropriate functions and represents and institution internally and externally as
requested.
5. Participate in the orientation of all new employees.
6. Comply with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC) standards of professional
practice.
7. Collaborate with local clergy, employees of the organization and members of the Medical
Staff to ensure appropriate spiritual care is provided to the organization’s patients, residents
and clients.
8. Visit patients and their family and friends to assess their spiritual needs and provide or
arrange the appropriate service.
9. Collaborates to support whole person-centered care across all disciplines and is a member
of the inter-professional team
10. Provides education to staff regarding the role of Spiritual and Religious Care and
participates on committees which assist and nurture the spirituality of residents/patients,
families, staff and volunteers.
11. Arrange services, celebration of religious holidays, memorial services, the provision of
sacraments and ensures a supply of religious material.
12. Ensure that twenty-four (24) hour emergency clergy service is provided through an on-call
system.
13. Provides staff support and debriefing related to work crisis.
14. Provide grief counseling to individuals and groups.
15. Maintain the chapels of the Hospital, the Manor and the Oaks Centre.
16. Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
1. Successful completion of clinical spiritual education recognized by the Canadian Association
for Spiritual Care and certification as a Spiritual Care Practitioner preferred.

EXPERIENCE:
1. Minimum of two years of demonstrated chaplaincy experience in healthcare, preferably in a
long-term care or hospital environment

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of, and willingness to support SJGHEL’s Mission, Vision & Values of

Sacredness of Life.
2. Demonstrated competency in adult education
3. Theoretical and practical understanding of the Catholic healthcare ministry as a part of the
mission of the Catholic Church
4. Well-developed written and oral communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills
5. Understanding of the current healthcare environment
6. Appropriate experience and knowledge of the delivery of healthcare in an institutional
setting as well as in the ambulatory setting
7. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate
effectively with all members of the organization and external partners.
8. Demonstrated strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g.
Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
