Nursing Education
Successful completion of a nursing education program designed to prepare you for the type of nursing (RN, RPN) in Ontario.
Registered Nurse - An approved Canadian university baccalaureate degree in nursing.
Registered Practical Nurse - An approved Ontario college diploma program in practical nursing.
Key Responsibilities
Under the supervision of a Licensed Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse:
- Work as a member of the interprofessional team applying the person-centered approach to care.
- Complete and ensure resident’s clinical care assessments, care/service plans, and documentation are accurate, up-to-date, and changes communicated as required.
- Implement and evaluate the effectiveness of care/service plans and make changes as needed.
- Assist with scheduling resident care conferences and participate in them where applicable.
- Work closely with the Director of Care to facilitate resident move-in, move-out, and transfers.
- Provide direct resident care, medication/treatment administration, and document care in compliance with regulatory and Extendicare standards.
- Process orders, safekeep drugs and narcotics, and administer them following all regulatory requirements and policies.
- Facilitate and provide resident/family education.
- Plan, coordinate, manage, and evaluate the resident’s care plan with the resident/substitute decision maker, physicians, nursing and interdisciplinary team, and contracted service providers.
- Coordinate nursing team’s resident care assignments to ensure efficient and timely service delivery.
- Respond to significant changes in resident’s condition or medical emergencies; provide emergency first aid.
- Address resident/family concerns, ensure appropriate actions are taken, and communicate issues to relevant staff.
- Assist in the coordination, implementation, and monitoring of Infection Prevention and Control, Health and Safety, and Quality/Safety Plans.
- Uphold the organization’s values and ethics as outlined in Extendicare’s Code of Conduct.
- Report any risk issues immediately to registered staff.
- Complete all other duties as assigned.
Applicant must refrain from using the protected titles “RN” or “RPN” during the placement.
Required Education, Credentials, and Experience
- Must demonstrate successful completion of a nursing education program suitable for the nursing type (RN, RPN, or NP) intended to practice in Ontario.
- Must pass the registration examination approved by the College for the nursing type.
- Must complete the Jurisprudence Examination relevant to the nursing practice.
- Must provide proof of citizenship, residency, or authorization to work in Ontario.
- Must disclose any past offences, findings, or proceedings related to practice or conduct.
- Must declare any physical or mental conditions that could impair safe practice; the College must be satisfied with your ability to practice with integrity and lawfulness.
