Speech-Language Pathologist, Regina Public Schools

Regina Public Schools is located on Treaty 4 land in the homeland of the Métis. It is one of the largest school divisions in Saskatchewan, serving the educational needs of more than 25,000 students in 44 elementary schools, eight high schools, three faith-based associate schools, Campus Regina Public and the Allan Blakeney Adult Campus.

Speech-language pathologists in schools help children and youth succeed academically, socially, and emotionally by helping them improve their communication skills. They collaborate with educators, caregivers, other professionals, and community agencies to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments for all students and strengthen connections between home and school. Speech-language pathologists in schools are highly trained in communication development and disorders and work to find the best solution for each student and situation. They use different strategies to address student needs and to improve school and division-wide support systems.

What You Will Do
  • Promote tolerance, understanding, and appreciation of diversity within the school community.
  • Facilitate improving staff and caregiver cooperation by promoting improved communication between home and school.
  • Advise students, school personnel, caregivers of referred students, and division-based personnel concerning communication challenges and helps others to understand child development and how it affects learning and behavior.
  • Collaborate with teachers, caregivers, and administrators to find effective solutions to communication and learning.
  • Complete speech, language, voice, fluency, and augmentative and alternative communication assessments and reports.
  • Support the implementation of augmentative devices to support student achievement.
  • Participate as part of a school team to make recommendations to best support individual students.
  • Conduct communication screening in the areas of speech, language, voice, and fluency with a focus on early learners.
  • Work with Student Achievement teams using the Intervention First model to identify factors and needs that contribute to student challenges, as well as recommend evidence-based interventions, and when appropriate, participates in intervention plans and IIP development.
  • When appropriate, provides communication services in the following forms: direct intervention in small groups or individually, classroom-based intervention, whole classroom programming, team teaching, consultation, home programming, and monitoring communication development.
  • Work directly with children and their caregivers to help resolve problems in learning due to communication delays or disorders.
  • Provide training and in-service in areas related to communication development and disorders to teachers, support staff, and caregivers.
  • Liaise with community agencies, such as Wascana Rehabilitation Centre, Child & Youth Services, Audiologist, Private Speech-Language Pathologist, other school divisions, ECIP, SPARC, SCEP, and the Early Learning Centre.
  • Assist with the provision and development of resources for students to access the curriculum.
Qualifications

  • Must have a Master degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited university.
  • Must be licensed with the Saskatchewan Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists.
  • Must adhere to all bylaws and policies, including the code of ethics, as stipulated in The Speech-Language Pathologist and Audiologist Act of the Government of Saskatchewan.
  • Must complete the required continuing education hours to maintain licensure and certification mandated by the provincial licensing body and national certifying body.
  • Demonstrated abilities to develop and maintain good working relationships with students, parents/guardians, and all levels of staff within school systems, local and provincial organizations, and with a broad cross section of individuals and agencies within the local community.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check for the duration of employment.
