Job summary

Lumenus Community Services in Toronto, ON invites applications for a full-time Speech-Language Assistant to support the Preschool Speech and Language Program on the Community Based Early Years Team. Services are delivered at agency locations and in community settings, both virtual and in-person, under the supervision of a Speech-Language Pathologist.

Qualifications

  • Graduate Diploma or Degree in Communicative Disorders (e.g. CDA Diploma Graduate).
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working with children aged 6 months to 4 years and their families.
  • Knowledge of communication disorders and delays in children.
  • Knowledge of mental health and developmental/social-emotional needs in children.

Responsibilities

  • Follow documented treatment plans developed by the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist.
  • Initiate, plan and develop speech and language therapy materials under supervision.
  • Provide individual and/or group intervention sessions including coaching for parents/caregivers.
  • Document client performance and progress notes for the supervising SLP.
  • Generate progress summaries at the end of therapy blocks for review by the SLP.

Lumenus Community Services is hiring one full-time fixed term Speech–Language Assistant to join our Preschool Speech and Language Program on the Community Based Early Years Team. Services are primarily delivered at agency locations, but can also take place in alternate community settings, in childcare settings, and in client homes. Both virtual and in-person services are provided as part of the program. Under the supervision of a Speech-Language Pathologist, the Speech-Language Assistant will provide speech and language intervention services to preschool children and their families, consistent with the standards and professional ethics of the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Treatment/Intervention/Parent Training
  • Follow documented treatment plans developed by the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist;
  • Initiate, plan and develop speech and language therapy materials under the supervision of a Speech-Language Pathologist;
  • Provide individual and/or group intervention sessions which includes coaching and modelling to parents/caregivers;
  • Provision of parent education in individual and/or group format; Document client performance (e.g., succinct progress notes) to provide to the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist;
  • Generate progress summary at the end of each therapy block for children receiving individual /group therapy – this is provided to the Speech-Language Pathologist to review and co-sign.
Consultation
  • Under supervision of the Speech-Language Pathologist, provide consultative services to family members, other caregivers and community agencies (e.g., childcares, EarlyON) in person and over the phone
Service Coordination and Referral
  • When necessary and with parental consent, communicate with other persons working with the child and/or family;
  • When necessary and with parental consent, support referrals to outside professionals;
  • Participate in meetings as necessary for intake, transition to school, etc.
Administration
  • Maintain clinical statistics on TREAT system;
  • Complete reports and statistics as necessary;
  • Participate in quality improvement programs;
  • Promote preschool speech and language services and programs within the community;
  • Assist in the maintenance and selection of equipment and supplies;
  • Participate in regular staff meetings, agency meetings, and committees;
  • Comply with agency policies and procedures.
Professional Development
  • Contribute to a climate conducive to personal and professional growth;
  • Participate in continuing education programs as well as read and review materials relevant to the delivery of speech and language services;
  • Plan, develop, implement and participate in educational programs for clients, caregivers, groups, and agencies;
  • Participate in professional memberships and groups as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A Graduate Diploma or Degree in Communicative Disorders (i.e. CDA Diploma Graduate)
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working with children aged 6 months to 4 years, including children with multiple needs, and their families (parents, caregivers, guardians);
  • Knowledge of communication disorders and delays in children;
  • Knowledge of mental health and developmental/social-emotional needs in children (e.g, autism, developmental delay).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Good planning, organizing and problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams both within the agency and the community;
  • Knowledge of early childhood development and current effective intervention strategies;
  • Working knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, 2017;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Teams, Microsoft word, Boardmaker and Internet;
  • Keen observational skills;
  • Flexibility in service delivery to a wide variety of settings and families.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Flexibility to work evenings, with varied hours;
  • Satisfactory clearance under the Vulnerable Sector Screening program;
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle are strongly recommended.
