The Opportunity

Reporting to the Managers of Rehabilitation Services, the Specialty Seating and Mobility Technician works as part of an interdisciplinary team in a family-centered care environment, providing seating and mobility services to children and youth with disabilities. They work under the supervision of the Seating and Mobility Occupational Therapist, guided by assessment and intervention plans.

  • Responsible for wheelchair set-ups, designing, fabricating, and modifying custom seating and adaptive devices.
  • Provides technical support to outreach clinics across the province, including organization, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Provides inpatient and outpatient services at the main IWK; travel may be required within HRM and occasionally provincially.
  • Collaborates with healthcare team members, clients, families, vendors, and community partners to ensure continuity of care and education.
  • Provides wheelchair maintenance and operation education.
  • Maintains inventory and submits purchase orders for seating equipment.
  • Cares for inpatient fleet of wheelchairs and ensures the maintenance of the rehab van.
  • Records workload and patient documentation following established standards.

This position involves lifting, using hand and power tools, operating shop equipment, and wearing safety gear as required.

Hours of Work: 8/8:30 am to 4/4:30 pm, with occasional travel for clinics within Nova Scotia.

Your Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of post-secondary education or relevant training, or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of anatomy (preferred).
  • Two years’ experience in seating or alternative positioning.
  • Experience working with children/youth with developmental disabilities (preferred).
  • Ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of equipment, materials, and tools required.
  • Proficiency in carpentry, sewing, mechanics, and fabrication techniques.
  • Experience with wheelchairs, maintenance, and lifting techniques (preferred).
  • RESNA Certification (preferred).
  • Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) and Safe Travel for All Children (STAC) training are assets.
  • Physical ability to perform duties, including lifting.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated, creative, and flexible.
  • Valid Class 5 Nova Scotia driver’s license.
  • Current BLS certification from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
  • Additional language skills are assets.
