Job summary

Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of Island Health (Vancouver Island Health Authority), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. The requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

This position offers a regular full-time training opportunity (theory and practicum) to prepare staff to work in a specified Island Health specialty department. Upon completion of the training, staff will be placed into a regular full-time rotation line within the specialty department. Part-time lines may also be available based on vacancies.

Note: There is an 18-month return of service requirement as a regular/permanent employee within the trained specialty department. Staff may move between departments within that specialty. Reports to the Nurse Manager, Department Head, or designate. Plans and provides direct nursing care to patients/residents in hospital or community settings, in accordance with the unit/program philosophy, competency guidelines, policies, and BC College of Nurses and Midwives Standards for Nursing Practice.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience

Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN, with recent related medical and/or surgical experience. After completing this specialty training, staff will be transitioned into a regular position within the department.

The hours of work, including days off and work area, may change based on operational requirements, the Collective Agreement, and applicable statutes.

  • Ability to organize workload and set priorities.
  • Ability to effectively interact with co-workers, physicians, community agency representatives, patients, residents, and families.
  • Physical ability to perform duties of the position.
