Job description

Are you ready to shape the future of stroke services through research and clinical excellence? We are offering an exciting opportunity for an innovative Specialty Doctor to join our dedicated stroke medical team at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust. This permanent role involves working across both Peterborough City Hospital and Hinchingbrooke Hospital.

You will work alongside our experienced consultants and resident doctors to deliver high-quality inpatient and outpatient stroke care.

We are deeply committed to research and innovation. You will have the opportunity to contribute to and lead both local and multicentre research projects. Our team is engaged in pioneering studies focused on pre-hospital and hospital stroke care, as well as the use of point-of-care ultrasound. We are proud to be one of only 19 European Centres participating in the SECRETO study (Search for Explanation for Cryptogenic Stroke in the Young), which has had significant clinical and research impact.

Main duties of the job

The post is anticipated to include 10 programmed activities (PAs) per week. However, we are open to negotiating elements of the job plan to best support the evolving needs of clinical service delivery and the wider department.

You will play an integral role in delivering high-quality stroke care, supported by a dedicated team of four stroke consultants and a well-established multidisciplinary team. Your core responsibilities will include :

  • Providing timely stroke thrombolysis and managing acute stroke referrals
  • Conducting regular ward rounds and participating in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings under consultant supervision, as per the internal rota
  • Running and supporting Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) clinics and inpatient assessments
  • Participating in a 1 : 4 twilight on-call rota (2pm–10pm), including weekends, to ensure continuous thrombolysis coverage and expert response to stroke referrals

In addition to clinical responsibilities, you will actively contribute to the department’s research portfolio, including ongoing and future research programmes. You will also engage in service development initiatives aligned with national stroke targets and locally commissioned service improvements. Your involvement in innovation and evidence-based practice will be key to driving the quality and efficiency of stroke services across both hospital sites.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The principal elements of the post will be :

  • To facilitate provision of stroke services to the population of Greater Peterborough & Southwest Lincolnshire in conjunction with the existing Consultants and doctors.
  • It is expected that the post holder will participate fully in future service developments in line with national targets and locally commissioned improvements.
  • To contribute to inpatient stroke service delivery by participation with colleagues in :
  • Hyper-acute care including thrombolysis
  • Rehabilitation
  • To provide a stroke consultation and advisory service to medical colleagues in other specialties in the Trust potentially in other locations e.g., City Care Centre, Early Supported Discharge team.
  • Provide Outpatient care of patients in the North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust with stroke and TIA under consultant supervision.
  • To participate actively in both Stroke Service and Trust clinical governance and audit.
  • Undertake continuing medical education.
  • Supervise and train junior medical staff as appropriate.
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as appropriate.

Education and Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent

  • Minimum of 4 years post graduate experience in general medicine, 2 of which are in stroke medicine
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a wide range of problems in adult medicine including stroke (acute and rehab)
  • Ability to take responsibility for clinical care of patients with consultant supervision
  • Experience in comprehensive stroke care, including emergency, acute and rehabilitation care.
  • Ability to participate in the smooth running of stroke medicine services.
  • Ability to participate in a multidisciplinary team balancing specialty and generalist objectives.
  • Ability to contribute to development and implementation of services
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work effectively
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets
  • Experience in project management
  • Management skills including training in teaching skills
