Job Description: Specialized Services Coordinator

Kina Gbezhgomi Child and Family Services (KGCFS) is an Anishinabek Agency dedicated to serving Anishinabek people by delivering culturally grounded child welfare services that honor the Anishinabek way of life. Our approach emphasizes the primacy of Anishinaabe cultural practices, supplementing conventional services as needed to ensure cultural responsiveness and protection of traditional practices.

Overview

The Agency recognizes the vital contribution of Volunteer Services to our mission. The Volunteer Services Program aims to enhance and support our services to families and children. Volunteers are a key asset, requiring ongoing support, training, and supervision.

Under the supervision of the Service Supervisor, the Specialized Services Coordinator will oversee the volunteer and parent support programs, ensuring compliance with KGCFS policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  1. Manage and coordinate the Volunteer and Parent Support Programs in line with the agency's policies.
  2. Ensure recruitment and selection procedures meet established criteria.
  3. Develop and implement volunteer recruitment strategies, including orientation, training, and wellness initiatives.
  4. Support staff involved in volunteer programs.
  5. Facilitate connections between volunteers, parent support workers, and placements.
  6. Address program issues, including disciplinary actions and terminations.
  7. Maintain updated resource lists.
  8. Evaluate programs regularly against agency standards.
  9. Develop annual work plans and budgets; oversee reimbursements and funding applications.
  10. Conduct research and foster partnerships with community resources.
  11. Participate in cultural activities and circles to enhance cultural competence.
  12. Possess working knowledge of Anishinaabe culture, customs, and traditions.
  13. Engage actively with Anishinaabe communities, incorporating teachings from the medicine wheel.
  14. Work collaboratively with all stakeholders, including families and First Nations.
  15. Create an anti-oppressive work environment, modeling respect and professionalism.
  16. Complete cultural self-assessments and develop wellness and cultural training plans.
  17. Participate in agency cultural training and events.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Social Services, Native Child and Family Worker, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Minimum two years of experience in indigenous child welfare; experience within Anishinaabe services preferred.
  • Preference for individuals of Anishinaabe ancestry with lived experience and understanding of Anishinaabe traditions.

Conditions of Employment

  • Clear Police Records and Vulnerable Sector Checks.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License, reliable vehicle, and $1M liability insurance if transporting clients.
  • Willingness to travel and work flexible hours.

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities

  • Proficiency or willingness to learn Anishinaabe language.
  • Knowledge of Child and Family Services Act, policies, and protocols.
  • Strong communication, organizational, evaluation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office and agency systems.

  • Deep respect and understanding of Anishinaabe culture and commitment to cultural strengthening.
  • Knowledge of Anishinaabe history, colonization, and government policies affecting the community.
  • Ability to perform with cultural safety, sensitivity, and humility.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Exposure to traditional practices such as burning sacred medicines.
  • Potential for emotionally and mentally challenging situations.
  • Ability to perform physical activities, including lifting up to 12 kg (25 lbs), and work in various settings.
