Job summary

The City of Burlington is seeking a part-time Specialized Program Instructor – Musical Direction & Vocal Performance to support Burlington Student Theatre programs for ages 4–17. Work is in person at the Student Theatre Centre and involves rehearsals, classes, and performances.

Reporting to the Artistic Supervisor, you’ll plan engaging music-based instruction, develop vocal technique, and collaborate with a creative team to realize productions while ensuring a safe, inclusive learning

Qualifications

  • Completion of a College Diploma or University Degree in Music, Vocal Coaching, Arts Education, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in music direction, vocal instruction, choral leadership, or musical theatre.
  • Experience working with children and/or youth in a recreational or educational setting.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and creating safe spaces for youth.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C certifications are required (or willingness to obtain).
  • Police Check Requirement: clear criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening required.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and facilitate rehearsals, workshops, classes, and performance activities for youth participants.
  • Guide participants in vocal techniques, ensemble singing, harmony, diction, and performance skills.
  • Develop and adapt vocal training materials, music resources, and rehearsal plans.
  • Prepare vocal scores, rehearsal tracks, sheet music, lyric sheets, and materials as needed.
  • Collaborate with the creative team to execute the artistic vision of productions.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive environment and effective communication with families and staff.

Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.Position OverviewThe City of Burlington is accepting applications for a Specialized Program Instructor – Musical Direction & Vocal Performance to support Fall/Winter/Spring Burlington Student Theatre programs for children aged 4-17 years.Reporting to the Artistic Supervisor, Program & Theatre Services, this role is ideal for a passionate musical director and vocal instructor who enjoys working with young performers in a collaborative, creative, and supportive environment.This role is responsible for planning and delivering engaging music-based instruction that develops participants’ vocal technique, musicality, confidence, and ensemble performance skills. Working collaboratively with the Music Director (orchestra), this role supports the artistic vision of each production, including mainstage shows at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre.Working collaboratively with artistic program staff, directors, and support staff, this role fosters a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment while helping participants build confidence, performance skills, creativity, and stage presence throughout the rehearsal and performance process.ResponsibilitiesPlan and facilitate rehearsals, workshops, classes, and performance activities that support the artistic and personal development of youth participants.Guide participants in the development of vocal techniques, ensemble singing, musical interpretation, harmony, diction, and performance skills.Develop and adapt vocal training materials, music resources, and rehearsal plans to support youth theatre programs and productions.Prepare vocal scores, rehearsal tracks, sheet music, lyric sheets, and supplemental musical materials as needed for participants.Collaborate with creative team to plan and execute the creative vision of a variety of performances and productions.Foster a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all participants.Support participants in developing performance skills, confidence, and teamwork.Communicate effectively with families, staff, and City representatives as required.Ensure all activities align with City policies, safety standards, and program expectations.Escalate behavioural, safety, or wellbeing concerns as appropriate.Successful applicants will assist in ensuring the safety and supervision of participants both on and offsite and are expected to implement and participate in activities. All staff must always adhere to all health and safety regulationsDuties and responsibilities are inclusive but not limited to the aboveRequirementsCompletion of a College Diploma or University Degree in Music, Vocal Coaching, Arts Education, or a related field.
