Job summary

The City of Burlington is hiring a Specialized Program Instructor, RCC – Drama to support Fall/Winter/Spring Burlington Student Theatre for children and youth ages 4-17. In this role you will plan engaging drama instruction, guide performances, and collaborate with staff to deliver mainstage productions at city venues.

Requires a college diploma or university degree in drama or related field, minimum 2 years of drama education experience, and First Aid/CPR-C.

Qualifications

• Completion of a College Diploma or University Degree in Drama, Performing Arts, Arts Education, or a related field.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in drama instruction or theatre education with youth.
• Experience working with children/youth in recreational or educational settings.
• Standard First Aid and CPR-C certifications required (or willingness to obtain).
• Criminal record check with Vulnerable Sector screening required.

Responsibilities

• Plan and facilitate rehearsals, workshops, classes, and performances for youth.
• Guide participants in acting skills, improvisation, storytelling, and stage presence.
• Prepare scripts, lesson plans, and rehearsal materials.
• Collaborate with the artistic team to execute the creative vision across productions.

Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.Position OverviewThe City of Burlington is accepting applications for a Specialized Program Instructor, RCC – Drama to support Fall/Winter/Spring Burlington Student Theatre programs for children and youth aged 4-17 years.Reporting to the Artistic Supervisor, Program & Theatre Services, this role is ideal for a passionate drama educator and theatre practitioner who enjoys working with young performers in a collaborative, creative, and supportive environment.This role is responsible for planning and delivering engaging drama-based instruction that develops participants' acting, improvisation, storytelling, character development, and performance skills. This role supports a variety of Burlington Student Theatre programs and productions, including mainstage shows at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre.Working collaboratively with artistic program staff, directors, and support staff, this role fosters a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment while helping participants build confidence, performance skills, creativity, and stage presence throughout the rehearsal and performance process.ResponsibilitiesPlan and facilitate rehearsals, workshops, classes, and performance activities that support the artistic and personal development of youth participants.Guide participants in the development of acting skills, including improvisation, character development, storytelling, scene work, and performance techniques.Prepare scripts, rehearsal materials, lesson plans, and supplemental resources to support program and production objectives.Collaborate with creative team to plan and execute the creative vision of a variety of performances and productions.Foster a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all participants.Support participants in developing performance skills, confidence, and teamwork.Communicate effectively with families, staff, and City representatives as required.Ensure all activities align with City policies, safety standards, and program expectations.Escalate behavioural, safety, or wellbeing concerns as appropriate.Successful applicants will assist in ensuring the safety and supervision of participants both on and offsite and are expected to implement and participate in activities.
