As a Specialist, Pharmaceutical Operations, you’ll be a key leader behind the scenes, ensuring the safe management, inventory control, and distribution of essential and controlled medications across Peel Region’s Paramedic Services division. This is a meaningful opportunity to apply your pharmacy knowledge in a dynamic, emergency-focused environment where your contributions have a direct impact on frontline care.

What You’ll Do

Pharmaceutical Inventory & Distribution

  • Oversee procurement, ordering, shipping, and receiving of medications and pharmaceutical supplies.
  • Track inventory movement, expiration dates, and reconciliation using Operative IQ.
  • Dispense medication orders to paramedic stations and manage stock levels to avoid service interruptions.
  • Deliver controlled substances to paramedic divisions, ensuring full regulatory compliance.
  • Source specialty items and prepare unit-dose oral medications when necessary.

Regulatory Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure compliance with SOPs and applicable federal/provincial regulations (e.g., CDSA, ALS/BLS Standards).
  • Manage documentation and reporting of controlled substances.
  • Support internal audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews.
  • Assist with medication recalls, expired drug disposal, and regulatory updates.

Emergency Preparedness Support

  • Support paramedic teams with medication access for emergency deployments or large-scale incidents.
  • Monitor drug shortages and market changes, communicating timely updates and mitigation plans.

Investigations & Risk Mitigation

  • Leads investigations into discrepancies involving medications and controlled substances, in collaboration with the Supervisor of Corporate Logistics and consultation with Professional Standards and Operations as required.
  • Analyze medication documentation errors and support corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with leadership and operations teams to ensure medication tracking and accountability.

Training & Education

  • Assist with developing and delivering training for paramedics on safe medication handling.
  • Collaborate with internal education teams and external regulatory stakeholders.
  • Develop educational tools and deliver workshops on medication safety and best practices.

Process Improvement & Innovation

  • Evaluate pharmaceutical processes for improvements in safety, compliance, and efficiency.
  • Support supply chain innovation and report on inventory status and optimization opportunities.
  • Recommend and implement new technologies and automation solutions where appropriate.

What You Bring to the Team

Education & Certification:

  • Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPhT) or Pharmacist in good standing with the Ontario College of Pharmacists.
  • In-depth knowledge of controlled substance regulations under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA).
  • Experience in hospital, EMS, or public sector pharmacy operations preferred.
  • Membership in CAPT (Canadian Association of Pharmacy Technicians) or CPhA (Canadian Pharmacists Association) is an asset.

Technical Skills & Experience:

  • Strong knowledge of pharmaceutical procurement, inventory systems (e.g., Operative IQ), and controlled drug protocols.
  • Skilled in pharmacy documentation, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance practices.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a high-demand environment.
  • Comfortable leading or supporting investigations and delivering training.

Communication & Collaboration:

  • Excellent interpersonal and team skills — able to work effectively with paramedic staff, vendors, and internal teams.
  • Clear and professional verbal and written communication.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); familiarity with ERP systems is an asset.
