In this role, the Specialist Materials Engineer is the Subject Matter Expert in the field of wear resistance improvement using metallic hard facing & non-metallics, failure analysis, water corrosion, and welding for various Syncrude assets. This role will also oversee advanced metallurgical analysis & developmental work done by external contractors to support asset integrity initiatives and provide the Business Units with technical support to ensure safe and reliable plant operations.
Minimum Requirements:
- Undergraduate degree or Master’s degree in Material / Metallurgical Engineering. Master’s degree preferred.
- Registered with APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) / APEGA Responsible Member (RM).
- 15+ Years experience working in the field of Corrosion Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Metallurgical Engineering in Extraction / Tailing applications.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to consult with colleagues, regulatory bodies, and networks to solve technical issues.
Key Accountabilities:
- Support Production Units in managing threats by identifying applicable damage mechanisms, likelihood of failure, metallurgical controls needed for successful repairs, repair/replacement decisions, and risk mitigation support through advanced analysis.
- Identify, support, and recommend/adopt technological advancements in application of:
- Advanced metallics and non-metallics for wear resistance in dry and wet slurry circuits,
- Additive manufacturing for critical parts,
- Welding and hard facing for wear applications,
- Field inspection of equipment/piping in wear applications,
- Advanced welding techniques for repair of critical equipment (Steam Methane Reformers, SRU Waste Heat Boilers, Mine Mobile equipment),
- Improved reliability and weld repairs of shovels and trucks.
- Lead failure analysis of failed components. Past experience in failure analysis of components in slurry applications would be an asset.
- Act as a specialist within a specific technical area requiring presentation of reports, recommendations, and interpretations of findings.
- Complete technical assignments, provide sound recommendations, and make decisions.
- Present original ideas and viewpoints—demonstrating innovative thinking and solutions.
- Assist in training and coaching less experienced employees and often assume mentorship roles for other engineers.
- Develop and deliver technical mentoring sessions and knowledge sharing.
- Advise on technical problems, review work for technical accuracy and adequacy.
- Demonstrate application of mature engineering knowledge in planning and conducting projects with scope for independent accomplishment and coordination of complex assignments.
- Provide oversight for work outsourced to third-party contractors and ensure technical deliverables meet company requirements.
- Participate in identifying risk scenarios to drive technical decisions related to Materials Engineering.
- Participate in Joint Industry Projects (JIP), external technical committees, and conferences as needed.
- Act as Syncrude’s Technical Authority for Metallurgical Engineering aspects in welding & wear applications, and authorize technical deviations.
Location & other key details:
- You will work out of our Syncrude Mildred Lake/Aurora location in Fort McMurray.
- Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with potential for extended hours based on business needs.
- Our engineering roles follow internal compensation guidelines; the pay band will be based on years of experience and scope of work.
- If residing outside Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory. Relocation support and housing assistance will be provided for eligible individuals.
