About Potash

The Jansen project in Saskatchewan, Canada is set to become one of the largest potash mines in the world and is located approximately 140 kilometers east of Saskatoon. BHP’s CAD$14 billion (US$10.5 billion) investment in the Jansen project will deliver a potash mine in Saskatchewan designed to maximize sustainability. As the largest investment in Saskatchewan’s history, Jansen is expected to generate approximately 5,500 workforce opportunities during construction and 900 long-term roles.

Jansen's construction will take place over several years with first production planned for mid-2027. Once fully ramped up, Jansen is expected to have an initial production capacity of approximately 8.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), with the potential to produce 16 to 17 Mtpa in future stages.

Work Location

This role will be based at the Jansen Mine Site located in Leroy, SK. The work schedule for this role will be seven days on, seven days off.

About the Role

In this role, you will:

  • Manage and improve environmental related controls/processes/practices in the field to facilitate environmental compliance and sustainability of Project activities
  • Liaise with frontline leaders, on-site Project team and Contracting Partners to achieve compliance with regulatory and BHP environmental management system requirements
  • Execute first and second line environmental and approvals assurance activities to identify and address potential gaps
  • Determine underlying cause of problems and evaluate multiple solutions to ensure a planned and structured approach to solving complex problems
  • Identify, assess and manage Project environmental and compliance risks, to make informed decisions using BHP’s risk management framework
  • Create, maintain and/or review environmental management plans, procedures and compliance documents and contribute a high degree of technical knowledge to the documentation and onboarding of them to customers
  • Proactively engage the capabilities of the Jansen team to achieve optimal environmental and sustainability outcomes in the field
  • Prepare and review technical documents for management review, including site annual regulator reports
  • Develop environment improvement strategies at BHP to effectively manage and mitigate environment risks both on and off site.
  • Recognise uncertainty and escalates potential threats and opportunities associated with daily activities.
  • Update project schedules/status reports, and actively participates in routines to monitor project performance, schedule and cost.
  • Engage relevant stakeholders to understand information needs and access the required data for input into the analysis.
About You
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering or a related field; with a background in mining or other resource industry
  • Previous experience in environmental management, regulatory compliance, environmental evaluation, or related roles; preferably for a resource industry
  • Proven experience in designing, implementing, and improving environmental controls, processes and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and manage diverse internal and external stakeholders effectively.
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • In depth knowledge of environmental regulations, standards, and best practices.
