Job summary

Canadian Blood Services is seeking a Regular part-time Specialist-Cord Blood Collection to join the Stem Cells team at the Ottawa Hospital General Campus. You will collect umbilical cord blood and maternal blood, promote awareness, and maintain relationships with stakeholders to support high-quality collections.

The role requires phlebotomy experience, accredited training, and the ability to work in a hospital setting with strong teamwork and independence.

Qualifications

  • Completion of accredited training program in phlebotomy or related experience.
  • Phlebotomy experience is required.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to learn new systems and programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, team building and ability to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team setting as a non-hospital employee in a hospital setting.
  • Must be able to work independently, identify issues and provide resolutions to problems at the hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble and prepare supplies, equipment, and necessary documentation at hospital collection site to support efficient and accurate cord blood collections.
  • Perform ex-utero umbilical cord blood and maternal blood sample collections, ensuring safety and compliance with all standards.
  • Perform quality control of equipment and supplies, maintain calibration records, and ensure all documentation is thoroughly completed.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and assist with quality event investigations to support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Liaise with hospital staff to maintain effective collaboration and ensure consistent opportunities for cord blood collection are maximized.

About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular part-time Specialist-Cord Blood Collection to join our dynamic Stem Cells team.

TheStem Cellsteam is responsible for collecting umbilical ex-utero cord and maternal blood samples, and ensure promotion, development and maintenance of an environment of continuous quality improvement, in accordance with regulatory and accreditation standards and customer satisfaction. The Collection Specialist will be responsible for collections at the The Ottawa Hospital General Campus ON. In addition, they will be responsible for promoting and maintaining public awareness/promotion and education as well as maintaining positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • With your attention to detail and strong organizational skills, you will assemble and prepare supplies, equipment, and necessary documentation at hospital collection site to support efficient and accurate cord blood collections.
  • Drawing on your knowledge of donor care and medical protocols, you will perform ex-utero umbilical cord blood and maternal blood sample collections, ensuring safety and compliance with all standards.
  • Leveraging your commitment to quality and accuracy, you will perform quality control of equipment and supplies, maintain calibration records, and ensure all documentation is thoroughly completed.
  • Using your investigative mindset and collaborative approach, you will participate in root cause analysis and assist with quality event investigations to support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • With your excellent communication skills, you will liaise with hospital staff to maintain effective collaboration and ensure consistent opportunities for cord blood collection are maximized.

What you can expect
  • Work schedule is on a rotational basis; Monday to Friday including holidays; 37.5 hours bi-weekly (2 shifts one week, 3 shifts the next)
  • Hours of operation are days and evenings, 8 hour shifts either 7 AM-3PM or 3PM - 11PM. Must be availe for on-call shifts on a rotational basis.
  • Training will be the first 4-6 weeks, hours will vary.
  • Physical requirements for the role include the ability to lift weights up to 10 kg (22 lbs.).
