Job description

Powered by heart and dedicated to excellence, we’re the team that keeps Calgary connected – and you could be our newest member.

We’re in the business of uplifting people, and every day, we create runways to new places and possibilities, building a better airport experience for everyone.

WHAT’S THE TEAM LIKE

The Safety, Security, Compliance, and Emergency Response team ensures the safe and secure operation of Calgary International and Springbank Airports. This team plays a critical role in regulatory compliance, emergency preparedness, and operational assurance, directly impacting the airports’ efficiency and safety. Their work supports the strategic goals of the organization and ensures a safe environment for all stakeholders.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct written and practical competency assessments for new Airside Vehicle Operator Permit (AVOP) applicants, renewing permit holders, endorsements, return-to-work assessments, and other airside operating privileges.
  • Verify applicant documentation and evaluate airside driving knowledge, vehicle control, radio procedures, situational awareness, and compliance with established safety requirements.
  • Approve, defer, or decline permit qualification; provide assessment feedback; and identify required practice, training, documentation, corrective action, or reassessment.
  • Maintain complete applicant, test, permit, employer, signing-authority, company-tester, billing, and program records across approved systems.
  • Review and revise AVOP manuals, testing materials, forms, templates, guides, and work instructions to reflect Airside Traffic Directives, airport procedures, and applicable aviation requirements.
  • Monitor compliance, investigate recurring assessment or documentation concerns, communicate corrective actions, and escalation significant or repeated matters.
  • Prepare billing information, dashboards, and monthly, quarterly, annual, and ad hoc reports; analyze results and trends to identify AVOP program improvements.
  • Respond to applicants, permit holders, employers, contractors, signing authorities, company testers, and internal departments regarding testing, permits, documentation, billing, and compliance requirements.
  • Post-secondary diploma in aviation, safety, business administration, or a related field of study is required. Extensive, relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • 2-4 years of experience in aviation safety, regulatory compliance, driver assessment, safety program administration, or a related safety role is required.
  • Experience operating a vehicle in a secured airside environment and applying airside driving procedures is required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Excel for data review and reporting, and the ability to learn and use testing, scheduling, credential, records, and billing systems.
  • Strong safety awareness and sound judgment, with the ability to apply assessment standards, permit qualification criteria, and safety requirements objectively and consistently.
  • Excellent customer service skills, with the ability to provide respectful and responsive service while maintaining professional boundaries and established AVOP requirements.
  • Strong records-management skills, with the ability to maintain complete and accurate information across multiple systems and follow applicant, employer, and permit-related activities through to completion.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an Airside Vehicle Operator Permit (AVOP).
  • As this position is considered safety-sensitive, candidates must successfully complete pre-employment drug and alcohol testing as part of the hiring process.
  • This role includes driving as part of its duties; therefore, candidates will be required to provide a valid Class 5 driver’s license and a current driver’s abstract as part of the hiring process.
WHAT ADDITIONAL SKILLS ARE AN ASSET
  • Knowledge of AVOP program requirements, Airside Traffic Directives, airport operating procedures, and applicable Canadian aviation requirements. Familiarity with TP 312 is an asset.
  • Understanding of Canadian Aviation Regulations is an asset.
  • Experience conducting competency assessments, practical testing, instruction, or coaching.
  • Bilingual in English and French
