Special Education Resource Teacher

Starting Date: ASAP

Salary Range: $66,122 to $117,053 (based on QECO category and teaching experience)

Summary

Long Point First Nation is an English-speaking Anishinabeg community in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Western Quebec. Amo Ososwan School offers Junior Kindergarten to Grade 11 classes with an Ontario curriculum-based program, including daily Algonquin Language and Culture classes. The primary role of the Special Education Resource Teacher is to provide targeted one-on-one and small group instruction to Grades 7–11 students on IEPs, addressing learning needs and difficulties, including gaps from absences or incomplete prior learning. This involves delivering remedial support to reinforce foundational skills, developing individualized strategies, and helping students achieve their IEP goals with measurable academic progress. The teacher collaborates with the Special Education team to develop and implement IEPs, supports classroom instruction, recommends accommodations, oversees differentiated instruction and assistive technology, and monitors IEP implementation.

Duties
  1. Develop and deliver tailored instructional strategies and interventions for middle and high school students with learning differences or support needs.
  2. Create, implement, and monitor IEPs, including transition planning for post-secondary education and career readiness.
  3. Conduct assessments to identify learning needs and track student progress, using data to inform instruction.
  4. Support differentiated instruction and integrate students with support needs into mainstream classrooms.
  5. Utilize appropriate learning resources and assistive technologies.
  6. Design and execute targeted remedial instruction to close learning gaps and reinforce foundational skills.
  7. Maintain accurate and confidential records of assessments, progress, and interventions.
  8. Encourage student voice and self-advocacy, helping set and achieve personal learning goals.
  9. Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress and collaborate for student success.
  10. Develop strategies to support students with behavioral and emotional challenges, ensuring a positive learning environment.
  11. Apply trauma-informed practices and support mental health needs through appropriate referrals or interventions.
  12. Stay current with best practices in special education and participate in professional development.
Mandatory Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education
  • Valid teaching certification from a Canadian province or territory (willing to obtain OCT certification if not already held)
  • Experience with students with learning difficulties and/or behavioral challenges, including behavior management strategies
  • Strong background in Special Education, including AQ courses or specialist qualifications
  • Experience developing and implementing IEPs
  • Ability to use differentiated instruction to meet diverse student needs
  • Must pass Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)
