Sound / Omni Tech - Theatre Practitioner - Level 2 or 3

This is a term position until July 26, 2025

The Opportunity

This Sound/Omni Tech position will have a background, along with basic competencies in the remaining departments. The job tasks may include assisting across other technical areas depending on the nature of the production, including lighting, staging, sound, and video departments. The Sound/Omni Tech provides the operational support required for the delivery of Performing Arts Programs and events on campus.

Role and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Production Manager, Performing Arts, the Sound/Omni Tech will help support this summer's events, including National Indigenous Peoples History Month and the Banff Summer Arts Festival. Below are some key accountabilities:

  • Support the integration of department-wide activities and assist in coordinating highly specialized activities as needed.
  • Execute all tasks with attention to safety procedures.
  • Provide technical production support for music concerts and various other productions including dance, opera, and theatre.
  • Support live music performances, including string quartets, orchestras, chamber music, new music, rock, and pop.
  • Liaise with staff to ensure effective support for artistic clients, participants, and faculty.
  • Assist with live audio setups for concerts, including microphone setup and basic troubleshooting.
  • Assist with wireless microphone system setups and mic performers.
  • Help ensure shows run smoothly by working with technical crews.

Qualification and Educational Requirements

  • Theatre Practitioner Level 2: minimum of 3 years’ experience as a practitioner in a Theatre or Performing Arts production environment.
  • Theatre Practitioner Level 3: minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar environment.
  • Formal theatre education completed.
  • Experience supporting live music preferred.
  • Experience working in a fly house is an asset.
  • Proficiency in computer and multimedia operation, and ability to operate specialized equipment.
  • Knowledge of relevant theories and practices.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to work under tight, changing timelines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of industry trends, techniques, materials, and health and safety standards.
  • Application of professional theatre techniques to support high-quality performances.

Special Requirements

  • Availability to work flexible, irregular schedules including weekends.

Employment Terms & Benefits

  • This is a unionized, hourly support staff position under CUPE 4318, subject to a 500-hour probation.
  • Level 2 pays between $22.59 and $25.85/hour, up to 40 hours/week on a rotating schedule.
  • Level 3 pays between $27.17 and $31.51/hour, up to 40 hours/week on a rotating schedule.
  • This is a term position until July 26, 2028.
