Job description

Sonographer- (1500-2330) US- Radiology-Downtown Campus

The University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown (located at 500 E. Market Street, Iowa City, IA) Radiology Department is seeking to hire for one position at either the Sonographer (Pay Grade 5) or Sr. Sonographer (Pay Grade 7) level, based on qualifications. Please specify in your cover letter which position you are applying for, or indicate both.

University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown is a 194-bed hospital that joined Iowa’s comprehensive academic health system on Jan. 31, 2024.

Selective candidates may be eligible for a sign-on bonus of $10,000. Current UI employees are not eligible.

Responsibilities include performing complex radiographic procedures requiring independent judgment, participating in teaching and advising, and collaborating with physicians and other healthcare staff.

Schedule: Mon-Fri, 3pm-11:30pm, with call rotation and holiday shifts.

Duties:
Sonographer:
  • Assist in training co-workers and students, and contribute to developing new procedures.
  • Assist physicians with advanced procedures such as biopsies and amniocentesis.
  • Maintain ARDMS certification through continuing education.
  • Coordinate procedures with nursing, referring offices, and within Radiology.
  • Interview patients and record medical histories related to ultrasound exams.
  • Prepare medications as prescribed by licensed practitioners.
  • Maintain equipment and report malfunctions.
  • Prepare patients and determine technical parameters for ultrasound exams.
  • Ensure patient safety and comfort during procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Senior Sonographer:
  • Obtain and document comprehensive health histories and physical examinations.
  • Provide primary, acute, and complex care, initiate referrals, and manage patient care plans.
  • Order, perform, interpret, and collect diagnostic data.
  • Develop differential diagnoses and treat conditions.
  • Prescribe and implement therapeutic interventions.
  • Use evidence-based protocols in care planning.
  • Offer specialty consultation services.
  • Facilitate patient transitions within healthcare settings.
Qualifications:
Sonographer:
  • Completion of a CAAHEP-accredited program or equivalent, or a combination of health science education and sonography training.
  • ARDMS certification or eligibility within 1.5 months of hire (required).
  • RVT certification or eligibility within 1.5 months of hire (required).
  • Preferred: Certification in Abdomen and OB/GYN by ARDMS.
  • BLS certification within 6 months of hire (required).
Senior Sonographer:
  • Completion of a CAAHEP-accredited program or equivalent, or a bachelor’s degree plus sonography training.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Certification by ARDMS or equivalent.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience in clinical education.
