The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) provides integrated health and social services across the territory, with a focus on culturally respectful, patient-centered care. It sets clinical standards and policies to ensure consistent, accountable service delivery, including emergency care, mental health support, child and family services, and long-term care. Services are designed to be culturally safe, especially for Indigenous clients, by incorporating anti-racist, trauma-informed practices and traditional knowledge.

In the Beaufort Delta Region, Inuvik Regional Hospital offers a wide range of services, including diagnostic imaging. The Sonographer plays a key role in this team, performing ultrasound exams that aid in diagnosing conditions involving the abdomen, pelvis, heart, blood vessels, and pregnancy. The role demands precision, critical thinking, and empathy, particularly during sensitive procedures. Working closely with radiologists and other professionals, the Sonographer helps ensure timely, accurate, and respectful care in a diverse northern setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Using ultrasound equipment while working independently with mostly remote Radiologist supervision, the Sonographer performs sonographic examinations (scan, interpret and document) that will accurately demonstrate pathology (or wellness) of the patient to the diagnosing Radiologist and referring physician.
  • Independently performs quality control (QC) tests on ultrasound equipment in order to maintain image quality and to ensure a safe environment for patients and health professionals.
  • Provide reliable and current sonographic information to Stanton staff, Physicians, Radiologists and others as required.

This level of knowledge is typically acquired through the successful completion of a Canadian Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program from an accredited facility, plus 2 years of related experience including first, second and third trimester obstetrical exams.

Registration with Sonography Canada is required. The incumbent will be required to authorize the employer to independently verify the registration with Sonography Canada.
