Job Responsibilities:

A construction labourer or construction worker does physical labor on construction sites, with a primary focus on the installation of structural solar material including foundations, solar racking, and PV modules. Additionally, they may prepare sites by cleaning them, loading or unloading materials, and removing hazards. A general labourer may also run some types of equipment or put together and take apart temporary structures. They are essential to solar construction, building, and environmental remediation.

Duties:

  1. Mounting and securing solar panels to structures using a variety of tools and materials.
  2. Aligning solar panels according to site layout plans and engineering drawings.
  3. Assembling racking system components, such as beams, rails, and supports, following manufacturer specifications.
  4. Using tools such as wrenches, drills, and levels to ensure accurate assembly.
  5. Securing racking structures to the foundations, ensuring stability and proper alignment.
  6. Utilizing bolts, screws, and other fasteners to mount racks securely.
  7. Loading and unloading construction materials, and moving them to work areas.
  8. Installing and removing forms, scaffolding, ramps, catwalks and barricades, securements, fencing, and other related material at construction sites.
  9. Assisting heavy equipment operators to secure attachments to equipment.
  10. Signaling heavy equipment operators to guide them in moving equipment.
  11. The installation, alignment, fastening and commissioning of materials and performing related activities.
  12. Leveling earth to grade specifications and trench digging or backfilling.
  13. Removing rubbish, recycle and other debris at construction sites using rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, and other equipment.
  14. Operating manual and powered hand tools.
  15. Tending or feeding equipment used in construction.
  16. Oiling and greasing equipment.
  17. Directing traffic at or near construction site.

Skills and Qualifications:

  1. Solar installation or other large site construction experience.
  2. Class 5 driver’s licence.
  3. Ability to pass a fitness-to-work test.
  4. Some knowledge or capacity to learn electrical construction and safety concerns.
  5. CSTS 2020 Foundations (available online for free through ACSA).
  6. A quality mindset and attention to detail are important.

Additional Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Assisting electrical or supervisor colleagues in their tasks where required.
