Job summary

OSI Maritime Systems in Burnaby seeks a Software Engineer 2 to design, develop, test, and maintain our software products for navigation and bridge systems."

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary engineers to deliver software across the full lifecycle, write high-quality C/C++ code, and participate in code reviews while supporting customers during integrations and deployments.

Qualifications

• 2–4 years of software development experience.
• Experience with real-time interfaces to external systems is desirable.
• Experience in ISO 9001-compliant software engineering environments is an asset.
• Knowledge of marine navigation concepts is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, maintain, and deliver software modules through the full SDLC following OSI processes and coding standards; write high-quality C/C++ code and manage software specifications.
• Maintain and improve code quality by fixing defects and troubleshooting system problems and customer tickets.
• Take ownership by communicating deadlines, defining scope, and committing to project objectives and schedules.
• Provide technical documentation, review publications, and support lab setup or deployment activities.
• Mentor new staff, interface with customers during site visits, and ensure compliance with safety procedures.

The Software Engineer 2 applies the principles of software engineering to design, develop, test, and maintain our OSI software products. The Software Engineer has the primary responsibility to provide a successful implementation of the assigned software modules. The Software Engineer will collaborate with a team of multidisciplinary engineers and stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of our software products to our end users and customers. Our Engineers have a focus on collaboration, and assist their team with devising innovative technical solutions and removing roadblocks. As a group, the engineers work together to complete software development activities through the full software lifecycle. To do this the Software Engineer must demonstrate strong communication skills and interpersonal skills. The OSI Software Engineer exhibits professionalism, integrity, and ownership.

What will you do?

• Design, develop, test, maintain, and deliver assigned software modules through the full SDLC by following OSI documented software engineering processes, training, coding standards, best practices, ISO-9001-compliant development guidelines, and version control practices; write high-quality C/C++ source code, participate in peer code reviews, prepare and manage software specifications and requirements for new features, produce detailed software designs, and update design documents when changes are made.
• Maintain and improve code quality by correcting defects, troubleshooting system problem reports and customer tickets, and identifying, analyzing, and resolving diverse software technical challenges, while prioritizing and correcting usability, safety, and security concerns.
• Take full ownership of assigned work by resolving roadblocks, communicating deadlines and technical challenges to the Technical Lead or Manager, producing software estimates, participating in technical work breakdown and scope definition, and committing to project objectives, schedules, and budgets.
• Provide technical expertise by producing software technical documentation, reviewing documentation and publications developed by the Technical Publication group, supporting project or department needs, and, when required, participating in concept-phase prototypes or use cases, running test procedures, and supporting lab setup or deployment activities.
• Support team, customer, and workplace success by providing technical guidance and mentoring to new staff through onboarding and the buddy program; interfacing professionally with customers during site or ship visits; prioritizing customer requests; and following and ensuring compliance with workplace operating and environmental, health, and safety procedures and guidelines.

What will you bring?

• Education: Degree in Computer Science, Software, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics, or Mathematics.
• Experience: 2–4 years’ experience in a software environment; experience developing real-time interfaces to external systems; experience working in an ISO 9001-compliant software engineering environment would be an asset; experience in the defense or aerospace domains is an asset.
• Technical Skills: Experience in C/C++ development under Windows; experience in areas such as 2D/3D graphics, OpenGL, TCP/IP, GPS, UDP Multicast, and real-time systems is highly desirable; ability to understand and work with complex software requirement specifications; strong theoretical and algorithmic background with experience in mathematical and/or geospatial applications; ability to assist with analysis and design of solutions for algorithmically complex requirements; ability to learn quickly.
• Soft Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; uses strong communication skills to ask questions, provide technical solutions, and help build a strong team environment; ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced, challenging environment; strong teamwork skills; takes full ownership of any mistakes that are made and corrects the situation.
• Other: Required to obtain security clearance; occasional travel; knowledge of marine navigation concepts and systems is an asset.
