The Opportunity

Reporting to the VP, Engineering, the Software Engineering Manager provides operational leadership to a multidisciplinary group of systems and software engineers and developers, supporting the development and completion of complex and innovative software projects.

This is an in-office position and is ideally based in our Ottawa, Ontario office; however, we are open to considering candidates based in our Kelowna, BC office.

You will :

  • Build, mentor, and develop high-performing software engineering team, driving efficiency and fostering a strong sense of ownership
  • Proactively identify, attract, and recruit top software talent to strengthen the team
  • Act as a key technical advisor and contributor to the development of and execute on strategic roadmaps aligned with company goals
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence within the team
  • Work closely with Hardware Engineering, Test, DAO, PM and Sales to support strategic goals set forth by senior leadership, providing input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility
  • Engage and support contractors, vendors and key customers
  • Creation (design, development, prototyping and debugging) of software designs while mindful of cost, quality and production constraints
  • Conduct root-cause analysis and fixes for critical product and system failures
  • Documentation and implementation of the design process (standards, best practices, and procedures) for software products
  • Manage staffing resources against project needs and resolve conflicts
  • Creation of required product documentation and certification
  • Support the Quality Management System as applicable to the Engineering department
  • Collaborate closely with the Hardware Engineering Manager as it relates to the AS9100 system
  • Identify areas of future product development and design system wide solutions
  • Produce estimates, schedules and work breakdown structures for the software team, coordinating with other disciplines to collaboratively come up with an overall program schedule
  • Track and manage resources against established schedules
  • Participate in identifying potential improvement to company practices
  • Contribute to product roadmaps
  • Other duties as assigned.

What You Bring

Candidate Must Have’s

  • Bachelor's degree in software engineering or equivalent with 10 years of relevant industry experience within software development
  • 5+ years of management experience with a focus on development and coaching in a fast-paced environment
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • An innate ability to anticipate the impact of various solutions to technical problems
  • Strong conflict management and negotiating skills
  • Superior analytical, evaluation, and problem-solving abilities
  • Proven technical expertise in Linux and Web Development
  • Ability to identify and communicate risks

  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or other high-reliability and regulated industries
  • Strong background in embedded software development and real-time systems
  • Demonstrated success in leading cross-functional teams through full product lifecycle
  • Expertise in Agile development methodologies and DevOps practices
  • Proven ability to drive process improvements and optimize software development workflows
  • Track record of fostering innovation and driving technical excellence in engineering teams
  • Experience managing geographically distributed remote and in-office teams
