An innovative company is seeking a passionate software engineer to enhance the Ubuntu Pro Client. This role emphasizes quality-oriented software engineering in Python, focusing on interoperability across diverse environments. You will collaborate with talented teams, ensuring user needs are met while writing high-quality code and debugging issues. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in Python and Linux, with a personal commitment to the Ubuntu project and its values. Join a dynamic team that values diversity and fosters a collaborative environment, making impactful contributions to a tool used by millions worldwide.
Ubuntu Pro is a suite of specialist services provided by Canonical. Whether for enterprise customers deploying systems at scale or users who want security patching for their personal Ubuntu LTS at home, the Ubuntu Pro Client is the command-line tool that manages all these services.
The quality and stability of the Ubuntu Pro Client are critically important, as it comes pre-installed on every Ubuntu system. You will work with the Ubuntu Server team, alongside major cloud partners and multiple Canonical product teams to develop, test, and release improvements to the Pro client. You will also serve as a communication bridge with our users, ensuring their needs are met.
This role requires quality-oriented software engineering in Python with a focus on software interoperability across a wide range of target releases and environments. Excellent Python skills are essential, with previous contributions to open source Python projects being advantageous. Since the Pro client interacts with Ubuntu package management, experience configuring apt, knowledge of deb packaging, and general system administration are beneficial.
Applicants should be passionate about the Ubuntu project, its values, and building tools used by millions worldwide. A personal interest in quality, edge cases, ease of use, documentation, and community coordination is important. The Pro client is used in environments ranging from mission-critical to hobbyist, so candidates should be comfortable working with all end-user types and guiding engineering best practices accordingly.
Canonical is committed to fostering a workplace free from discrimination. Diversity in experience, perspectives, and backgrounds enriches our environment and benefits our users. We deeply value this diversity and encourage everyone to join the Ubuntu community.
