The Team

Global Banking and Markets Engineering (GBME) is the fast-moving, award-winning technology engine that powers Scotiabank’s Corporate, Investment Banking and Capital Markets businesses.

The Role

GBME is searching for Java Software Engineers who are continuous learners and are eager to boost capabilities of capital markets products and analytics platforms. The role focuses mainly on backend development using Java / Spring Boot / RESTful API with potential opportunities for front end development. (Approx. 70/30 split)

The successful candidate will have a strong technical and engineering mindset. You will work closely with business teams and cross functional engineering leaders to develop and implement market leading solutions for the various projects within GBME.

Is this role right for you? In this role you will:

1. Work closely with end users, and business teams to understand business needs, conduct gap analysis and requirements assessments as needed
2. Partner with Architecture on the design and integration
3. Deliver and enhance new and current solutions and applications
4. Be involved in the full life cycle of a project, responsible for producing actionable and complete specifications, writing production quality code, and implementation
5. Design, deliver and implement a database schema
6. Design test sets and automate where possible, including functional and non functional testing, regression testing as well as performance testing
7. Write deployment scripts and leverage tools such as the Accelerator pipeline to promote code
8. Support the solution in production (as needed)
9. Improve the end user experience by finding scalable solutions and addressing complex ad hoc queries.
10. Effectively communicate with technical and non-technical audiences
11. Able to work with and refactor legacy code (as needed).
12. Coach and train end users (as needed).
13. Participate and run SCRUM Meetings (as needed).

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We’d love to work with you if you have:

1. 4+ years of recent experience in backend development (Specifically Java / SpringBoot )
2. 4+ years of recent experience working with Python
3. 4+ years of recent experience in Microservices and API development in an enterprise environment
4. Working experience of database and SQL (e.g., Postgres, MSSQL, Oracle)
5. Working experience with Shell scripting in Unix/Linux environments
6. Working experience in an Agile environment, with experience and understanding of Test-Driven Development methodology
7. Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering or relevant experience.
8. Capital Markets experience (Understanding of Front, Middle and Back office operations)
9. Experience with Messaging Frameworks; IBM MQ/ Kafka/ Redis
10. Experience working with real-time, high availability and low latency systems
11. Experience in Java multi-threaded applications
12. Working experience with containerized systems in public cloud (Azure or GKE/GCP)
13. Familiarity (understanding) with front-end technologies (e.g., Angular, React, JavaScript, HTML, CSS)
14. Excellent communication and presentation skills.
15. Work as a contributing member of a team.
16. Values quality, while still managing expectations and deliverables.
17. Open to ideas and gives and receives feedback well.
18. Wants to understand financial market.
